according to portage I have thirty days before firebird will be removed from my system. Is there any way to keep it or is it time to look for a new distribution?

You could use an overlay or copy the ebuild to your personal one. Currently it is in the funtoo overlay and I wouldn't be surprised if it appeared in a few more after its removal from portage.
Although it may be time to shop for a new solution. A software project that ignores a major security hole for over a year is something to be concerned about.
