Maybe I'll use some other distro's - like Mint's - stuff for reference...

No matter, what a distro you will extract config from. Config is just a text file, modules stability doesn't depends on it.
Just extract it from kernel that supports most of your equipment.

Another one option is to use "make localmodconfig". It will give you config depening on lsmod command output.
Attach all the devices that you planning to use - keyboard, mouse, mike, camera, usb sticks (with different filesystems), e.t.c. mount all the filesystems and run make localmodconfig.

Second try was better. I now have Gentoo up and running, but being a lazy pampered bum, command line seems insufficient for me.
Is it usually the case that Gentoo is installed first, then from the command line you install the rest (like X)?

If you had taken the trouble to study the handbook first you would have known the answer is yes.
There's oodles of "point and click" distro's out there, take your pick.
Gerard.

You need to follow the handbook pretty closely, especially on a first install. Gentoo has a number of desktops available, most (but not all) based on X, so that's a major choice you need to make before installing a GUI. You need to build _everything_ apart from the stuff in the Stage 3 file (which just gets you a login shell); and some of the Stage 3 stuff gets updated and rebuilt as you proceed through the install.

turboscrew,

Yep. :)

Gentoo gives you two things
1) The packages you explicitly ask for
2) The packages required to support the packages you explictitly asked for.

It follows that if you haven't installed it, you don't have it.
This can seem a bit odd when you are coming from a binary distro that installs what its packagers think of as a desktop system but its the source of Gentoos flexibility.
You are making your own distro using the tools provided by Gentoo.

Thanks, all.
Now that the Gentoo itself is up and running, it's time to go after X and KDE (I think).

Due to being "free time challenged" I used .config and modules from Linux Mint 17 as the base.
(Just for those that may need similar kind of approach.)
Just have to get rid of all kinds of "kitchen sink drivers" and other excess stuff at some point later.
Some of it I already removed.
