Hi all,

when playing a ripped dvd, mplayer crashes with ffpmeg-1.2.6 while working with ffmpeg-1.0.8. This is reproducible
Code:

emerge =media-video/ffmpeg-1.0.8
emerge @preserved-rebuild          # rebuilds mplayer
mplayer somelegallyrippeddvd.avi   # works

emerge  =media-video/ffmpeg-1.2.6
emerge @preserved-rebuild          # rebuilds mplayer
mplayer somelegallyrippeddvd.avi   # crashes

mplayer normal output (sorry, partly in german, but you should be able to get the relevant info):
Code:

  in DOCS/HTML/de/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer ist abgestürzt. Das sollte nicht passieren.
  Es kann sich um einen Fehler im MPlayer-Code _oder_ in deinen Treibern
  _oder_ in deinem gcc handeln.

Any tips/links on how to proceed?

Gentlenoob ... looks like bug 513004.

BTW, you should be able to do 'LANG=C mplayer file.avi' and get the output in english.

best ... khay

In nearly all big countries such state doesn't exist (thanks majors companies!), many just not allow ripping at all, other allow ripping if dvd wasn't protect (and i suppose they could be count in hands the ones with 0 protection), or some other stupid laws (ok to rip, but not ok with a program...) ; and some laws makes in fact all linux programs to read a dvd as illegal, some allow breaking drm to "watch" it, but ripping isn't watching, some program are only legal when use in a country with laws that permits it (vlc is really popular, but out of french laws, i don't think many countries exist that permit its "legal" usage)...

Funny to see you were brainwash to specify "legally" in its name. Because without knowing where you from, anyone could safe bet your legally rip dvd is illegal, even you brought the dvd and own it.
Little bad ass pirate :)

ok, that bug report obviously escaped me. Is there anything to do for me now? It looks like all I could add is a 'me too'.

krinn: I'm from Germany (no lawyer, grains of salt etc.). Copies of legally purchased stuff are in principle allowed for private use here. Circumvention of copy protection isn't allowed, but there seems to be considerable slack to that for private use, again. Lots of grey areas of course, but I reckon my actual use case (occasional copies of bought dvd/cds to my laptop) more on the safe side. But one never knows. I should have spared that 'legally', but then again I've seen similar discussions (not here) going "thou shalt not copy" before coming to the issue at hand.

Nice tip about LANG, khayyam!

Thanks all!

Gentlenoob ... yes, you could add confirmation. The bug suggests that =media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729 doesn't have the issue, so you could use this package by adding the following to package.accept_keywords

/etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
Code:
=media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729

Hopefully this won't require other packages to be similarly keyworded ...

Just for the record: Before I could spare some time to try out more, todays update seems to have replaced ffmpeg by libav, next to updating a lot of other media related stuff. Standard stable mplayer now works again playing my avi-files. Nice timing :-) Does that qualify for a 'solved'?

BTW that LANG trick doesn't work for mplayer. It looks like the language is set at compile time via LINGUAS (didn't try it out).
