I'm getting an error 111 whenever I try to sync. Doesn't seem to matter what I set SYNC to in make.conf.

It works for me. If you need help, perhaps you could post some information to help us help you. Start with the full output of emerge --info ; emerge --sync.

It seems that quite a lot of mirrors were down simultaneously the previous days.

Thanks. Is there a way to copy the output without having to transcribe it? The system doesn't have a web browser or a shell installed on it yet.

Gooberpatrol66 ... all stages will have /bin/bash ... and so a shell ... as portage requires it. Anyhow, emerge app-text/wgetpaste ... you can then do the following (and post the URL's)

Code:
# emerge --info | wgetpaste
# emerge --sync | wgetpaste

You can also directly paste files if need be ...

Code:
# wgetpaste /path/to/file

best ... khay

When I try to install wgetpaste I get Connection Refused. "wget: unable to resolve host address *distfiles.gentoo.org*"

Okay, when I try to ping my router it says "connect: Network is unreachable"

Pretty sure it was working yesterday. The last thing I installed was udev.

If i remember well, udev change again how to disable new network names, but i think ssuominen made a news for that.

So check news or your network card name.
