Hi all, hoping you can help me out with 2 problems which confuses me.

The other day I installed the Cinnamon desktop environment, . Ever since then I have a few quirks which I would like to be undone and returned to their default behaviour:

1) The wallpaper doesn't work , by that I mean that whatever I change my desktop background to when logged into gentoo, it doesn't change on the login (desktop) , the changes are only made on the lock-screen.

2) occasionally The desktop icons "Computer and Home" fail to appear when booting into the desktop,
even when enabled in Cinnamon Settings > Desktop."Trash", "Mounted Volumes" etc. also fail to appear (if checked) in this caseThe selected wallpaper is displayed correctly

I even reinstalled cinnamon with their entire deep dependency tree

Code:
emerge -eva =gnome-extra/cinnamon-2.2.13

and it took 25 hours and 30 minutes but nothing has changed :(

Many thanks for any help in advance.

Have you tried etc-update to make sure there are no config files that need to be updated?

What happens if you create another user and try running it there? (i.e. do you have some old config files lying around?)

I have a similar wallpaper issues with Cinnamon on Archlinux. The only way I can effectively change it is to find an image and use the right-click/set as wallpaper route.

Sorry, no help here, but I have the issue with icons not appearing (trash in my case) on XFCE - so it might not be a problem with cinnamon if your Computer and Home disappear.

not much help in this post either, but I had a recent weird problem (recent = just this past weekend!)

I was trying to get XFCE working on one of my "junk" computers - using an old ATI Rage Pro AGP card. At first it worked just fine, got XFCE running but it was out of date (emerge --sync). I updated everything to latest.

Bad move.

The top bar and the bottom bar was all corrupt, the icons were shrunk and mousing over them didn't work properly. I tried re-emerging some stuff. No dice. Cleared the config in the user account. Still broken.

For the heck of it I popped out the card and replaced it with a GeForce4 MX440 using the nouveau driver I had also installed on the disk.

This time, XFCE worked just fine once more... no changes needed.

Go figure.

I have a feeling the VESA driver may had something to do with it, the ATI Rage Pro AGP, despite being a Mach64 card, does not work with the Mach64 driver (it segfaults on startup).

Some weird driver <-> software issue.

*sigh*
