Hello.

I am in a situation where I could put to good use avahi's network autodiscovery features to be able to connect to network printers at job and at home. However I am not having much luck with it.

I have never used avahi for anything, so the problem could very well be my incompetence.

I have re-emerged cups with zeroconf enabled. That pushed avahi and a few other things into my system.

Then I restarted cupsd, which, in turn, automatically started the avahi-daemon service.

Now, when I go to add a new printer, just to check, I see two entries for my Brother mfc j430w. One of them existed before, the other one is new, and when I select it it automatically sets the path to that printer to dnssd://Brother%20MFC-J430W._ipp._tcp.local/.

But I can't even print a test page, in the job status it says it couldn't find a printer called BRNE006E6ADB80F.local

However, avahi-browse -a reports this (amongst many other things):

Quote:
+ wlp5s0 IPv4 Brother MFC-J430W PDL Printer local
+ wlp5s0 IPv4 Brother MFC-J430W UNIX Printer local
+ wlp5s0 IPv4 Brother MFC-J430W Internet Printer local
+ wlp5s0 IPv4 Brother MFC-J430W Web Site local

So, avahi is seeing it. This must surely be a cups configuration issue, or maybe an issue with the brother printer drivers. Any idea?

Thanks.

or perhaps you need nss-mdns and a slight change in /etc/nsswich.conf

s/hosts: files dns/hosts: files mdns dns/

It's just a wild guess, but it's possible your pc simply can't translate name to IP
