I'm trying to install splashutils to get a splash screen during the boot process (I'd like to look at something during the ~30 seconds before kdm launches) and have opted for fbsplash, but i can't emerge it. It errors out trying to build miscsplashutils. Here is my emerge --info '=media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1::gentoo'

I saw on another post that disabling the truetype use flag would fix it, so I added it to /etc/portage/package.use but it doesn't appear to be used since in the log it shows it as enabled (it's enabled in /etc/make.conf, but that shouldn't matter since it should have lower priority in portage). Plymouth won't work since it doesn't seem to play very well with OpenRC.

A workaround is to build without the truetype USE flag.

Put this in your package.use file:

Code:
media-gfx/splashutils -truetype

Well that'd be the issue lol. I put sys-apps/splashutils -truetype for some reason, this should fix it.

lcronos ... from the comments in the bug it looks like the attatched patch works, so you you could apply it and retain the truetype useflag (if having support for truetype fonts is important).

Truetype isn't necessary, I'm just using it for a splash screen, thanks though. Plus I'm not sure how to actually use the patches lol, I'm still new to Gentoo, this is the first issue I've had where a patch could be used to fix the problem.

lcronos ... you're welcome. The ebuild is using 'eutils' and so 'epatch_user' will be in play, all you need do is the following:

Code:
# mkdir -p /etc/portage/patches/media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1/
# mv /path/to/truetype.patch /etc/portage/patches/media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1/truetype.patch
# echo "truetype.patch" > /etc/portage/patches/media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1/patch_list
# emerge --ask =media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1

See: 6.f. Applying Non-Standard Patches. Note I use the <category>/<package>[-<version>[-<revision>]] so that this patch is only applied to that specific package, if you wanted the patch to apply to all versions then simply use <category>/<package>.

If the ebuild doesn't support epatch_user then you can use 'ebuild' and 'patch' to achieve the same result ...

Code:
# ebuild /usr/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1.ebuild unpack
# patch -p1 --dry-run -d /var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1/work/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1 < truetype.patch
# patch -p1 -d /var/tmp/portage/media-gfx/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1/work/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1 < truetype.patch
# ebuild /usr/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1.ebuild compile
# ebuild /usr/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1.ebuild install
# ebuild /usr/portage/media-gfx/splashutils/splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1.ebuild qmerge

I'm using the absolute path to the ebuild and 'work' dir but relative paths are also acceptable. I also use '--dry-run' first to test if the patch will be applied correctly before actually patching.

HTH & best ... khay
