how about this:

i have a whole pile of old crappy pcmcia cards..

does anyone think i could make login dependant on having one of these cards in? like user : joe1 cant loggin unless PCMCIA card with serial number #######.# or whatever is in?

ever card has a unique number that is readable by linux right? so whould this work and has anyone done it yet?

kind of like a hardware PCMCIA passcard so you can loggin, if you aint got the card, you aint logging in.

Well, one of the primary tenets behind PAM is to provide an extensible way for authenticating users. So, I can't see why you couldn't write a PAM module that would authenticate folks based on the method you describe.
