Hi !

Yesterday, I have update my world that install the new version of ffmpeg (version 1.2.6). Since, the sound crackle with VLC.

I did the following things :
- Recompile VLC 2.1.2
- Update to ffmpeg 2.2.3 and VLC 2.1.4
- Revdep rebuild and emerge @preserved-rebuild (but nothing to do)
- Downgrade to ffmpeg 1.2.6 and vlc 2.1.4

This has not corrected the problem. I think having to recompile something .... but I do not know what.

However, Audacious and Mplayer work perfectly.

Code:

emerge --info
Portage 2.2.8-r1 (default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde, gcc-4.7.3, glibc-2.17, 3.14.2-gentoo x86_64)

Hello tuxdream

Is this with ALSA or PulseAudio?

Some other dependencies might have downgraded or upgraded, causing incompatibility; maybe you are able to find it, by pinpointing the dependency:
  • Check the emerge history output of `genlop -l` (from app-portage/genlop) or `qlop -l` (from app-portage/portage-utils) to see if any other dependencies were upgraded.
  • The command `cat /var/db/pkg/media-video/vlc-2.1.4/*DEPEND | tr ' ' '\n' | sed 's:^[>=]*::' | sort -u` will give you a full list of current dependencies of VLC 2.1.4.
Matching the output of the above two lines with each other should help you find the other dependencies that has recently downgraded or upgraded.

Currently, as its package maintainer on Gentoo, I haven't seen any recent reports; but there are some reports upstream at https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ when searching for terms like ~audio, ~sound, ~crack, ...

[/code]

I get the cracking away by using the following plug configuration

Code:

pcm.vlcplug {
     type plug
     slave.pcm "hw:CARD=HDMI,DEV=3"
     hint {
        show on
        description "HDMI Audio Output for VLC media player"
     }
}

in your .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf file

vlc will show a new input in its audio menu

Modify the slave.pcm if needed.

To solve my problem, I select manually the correct device in VLC. The other software (like Audacious) select the right device automatically (define in /etc/asound.conf)

Thank for your help.
