Gentoo Kernel And Hardware Wiki started!
The propose of this Wiki to provide information about how to configure a linux system (especially a gentoo linux system) to get a different pieces of hardware to work.
All information on this Wiki is published under the GNU Free Documentation License. http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=97313
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=97575
There are some examples in it and templates are existing for every category. Thre is not much data in it right now so feel free to feed it!
Lets see how successful this gets.
This might also reduce the number of dups in the forum...
If it gets very succesful, it will either have to move over to some gentoo or sourceforge site or to the New-To-Linux-Wiki, because right now it is running on a small homeserver. So while this is a testrun or proof-of-concept, info collected can be used/exported in any case. I am concidering a hint to the GWN, but first want to see how much bandwidth this consumes ...
Please give Feedback here or into the WikiFeedback

Great idea! I would think that at some point we'll probably need to differentiate between the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, and perhaps between things like mm-sources, ck-sources, etc.

nice start on those wikis... it looks Awesome so far. There's another thread running about gentoo dictionaries.. it would be awesome if we could get a wiki (or a few) going for that and also get these threads stickied for a bit until the wikis get enough info in them...
do you plan on matching the style to the rest of the gentoo documentation when alls said and done?[/url] _________________ www.manatee.servemp3.com

Yes. See WikiFeedback, 1.2 A more gentooy CSS

True. I think for a start this can be done by the
Code: | 1.2 available in
* gentoo-sources
* ck-sources
* vanilla-sources |
section in Kernel Configuration Options, but if it gets more info about different kernel sources, something new will be needed.
Thanks to anyone submitting infos to the Wiki so far
BTW, Please also put infos into Complete Products. We all know this strange feeling when buying new (especially no-name) hardware. Most of the hardware out there *is* already supported, however the name given by lspci and the name of the products in the shelf often differ. Example:
Creative Soundblaster 4.1 == Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI (rev 02)
So Complete Procducts may grow to "hardware supported by gentoo linux website one day"...

Well, a first step in that direction is done. Take a look!

I've never used a wiki before, so how do you add content. I was already to write up a page about setting up a tvcard, and I can't for the life of me figure it out. Is there a newbiewiki howto or somethign somewhere? _________________ Ban Reality TV!

Nice idea.
Just added : Archos Jukebox Multimedia.
I see a potential problem : differences between 2.4 and 2.6 kernel options (they are laid out differently).

Here is the "Help for Beginners" page:
http://michaelsen.kicks-ass.net/moinmoin/moin.cgi/HelpForBeginners
There is also a link to the WikiSandbox, where you can play around and learn via trial and error without breaking the Wiki
Basically to add info, you go to a page, for example:
http://michaelsen.kicks-ass.net/moinmoin/moin.cgi/PCI_2dCard_20Hardware
and press the "Edit this page" button at the end of the page.
The source of the page is presented in a editor window then. It looks like this:
Code: | = PCI-Card Hardware =
PCI hardware should be named by the output of {{{lspci -v}}}.
PCI hardware includes everything that can be described by {{{lspci}}}.
Please use the PciCardHardwareTemplate for new entries!
== Video Hardware ==
* ["VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 300/200"]
== Audio Hardware ==
* ["Multimedia audio controller: ALi Corporation M5451 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device"]
== IDE Controllers ==
* ["IDE interface: ALi Corporation M5229 IDE"]
== SCSI Controllers ==
== Ethernet Controller ==
* ["Ethernet controller: NVidia Corporation UnknownDevice 01c3"]
== Modems and Linmodems ==
== USB Controllers == |
There is also a short explanation about formatting below the editor. For to add info about TV-Cards, you better generate a new category (since it is not a Video, Audio Card or one of the others). This is, you add
Code: | == Multimedia Hardware == |
After that you put the specific hardware below it:
Code: | * ["Multimedia video controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Video Capture"]
* ["Multimedia controller: Brooktree Corporation Bt878 Audio Capture"]
|
Press "Save Changes".
Now you see the new page. The [""] marks tell Wiki, that it is a link. However, since there is no content behind the link, it will appear red.
If you click on the link, you will be able to generate content for this topic.
Use the fitting Template!
Since you add info about a PCI-Card use the PciCardHardwareTemplate.
Thats it!
Happy wikiing!

Hmmm, but they have the same names? So just the layout of menuconfig changed? Then I will have to make a "Kernel Configuration Option - 2.6 Kernel Tree" or something like that - linking to the same options as the other "kernel Configuration Options" page.
Any info about the 2.6 kernel config layout welcome - I did not use the 2.6 kernel up till now.

The layout has changed and some options were renamed. Makes much more sense now, but kinda difficult to find options when used to where they were before.
If I find a list of layout/names changes in 2.6 I will send it to you.

I just added
Other Help Resources
which might be a good link collection for gentoo support all by itself.

The Wiki got another facelift. Take a look!
- Added a very short help text about how to use this Wiki
- added a section for package specific configuration
- simplified the FrontPage
I am thinking about kicking out the "Required By:" section in the Kernel Config options template. Same for "Used In" sections in the Hardware Pages. The reason is simple:
To add hardware info, one has to modify pages all over the Wiki right now.
And since you can click on the "Headline" to see pages linking to the page you are watching, you can move "backwards" through the links ....
So links will simply be from -> to:
Complete Products -> PCI/USB Hardware -> Kernel Config Options
What do you think?
Thanks to all the guys submitting additions, corrections and feedback
