Hello everyone,

I am running several linux distros on my laptop and now I decided to give Gentoo a go. Unfortunately, I am having some trouble with X.

I get the following error messages: KMS not enabled & no screens found.
I wanted to go with nouveau, because I had no trouble with X and nouveau under Arch Linux.

Here's the complete log:
Code:

I don't know, how to enable KMS and what I have to do next. I followed up to the step where it says "try using startx without editing any configuration files". Thanks for reading.

Welcome to Gentoo, Jean G.

Did you consider the information here? (although it is not part of the handbook)

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Nouveau
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration

Furthermore much success for your installation.

Regards, Andy.

maybe i had the similar issue before...
if it complained: (EE) no screens found(EE)
then maybe you had some problem with kernel config,
do make menuconfig or genkernel --menuconfig all (recommanded) again,
and make sure you have config the graphics card driver following the wiki: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration
hope this is helpful for you!

Thanks for the warm welcome and for the help!

@Randy
Yes, I did read the links you provided but I also did make some mistakes (like assuming genkernel had nouveau enabled by default). I have to say, that I installed Gentoo two times. At first I configured the kernel manually but when I couldn't get X running, I assumed I must have made some mistakes (but I did enable nouveau then) and thought it better to use genkernel. Turns out I could have spared me that trouble.

@kenmux
Thanks a lot. That was exactly the direction I needed! I had to enable nouveau in the kernel (I only could choose the modular option [M]). I installed Xfce and so far everything seems fine. I have more reading to do and setting up everything I need but I hope the hard part is done. Thanks again!

You're welcome, Jean G.

Fine that you could solve your problem, while learning some more about Linux and Gentoo.

This will go on as long as you would like to use Gentoo. :wink:

Furthermore much success with it.

To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed with all the options in the kernel configuration. But I guess it is true what the handbook says: "after configuring a couple of kernels you don't even remember that it was difficult". At least I hope so. :lol:

I am using Arch on a regular basis but I wanted to know how Gentoo works, so I had to try it out eventually. I hope I'll get along.

Cheers!

It will come true, if you'll do it more often. I remember the pain, as I've done it the first time, without the help of any Howto or a similar well written documentation.

It will not be to your disadvantage. :wink:
