So, I'm not entirely sure what I did, as I did several things trying to get squid to restart. I think the system-killer was updating to baselayout2 and (possibly) installing openrc. At this point, my system is missing several key files, including:
/sbin/runscript
/etc/init.d/depscan.sh
/etc/init.d/functions.sh
/etc/init.d/runscript.sh
and probably some others I haven't noticed are missing. I'm not new to linux, although I haven't been following Gentoo in the last few years, so it's possible I missed some major announcements. Any thoughts on how I can get my system healthy again? |

You can get those back by emerging the baselayout and OpenRC again, in addition to that functions.sh is now in sys-apps/gentoo-functions; make sure that you are emerging these packages from the Portage tree, it might be that you've got the current ones from an overlay.
If needed, the package app-portage/portage-utils has an utility qcheck that can be used to check integrity of packages; that makes it able for you to pinpoint whether other files are missing. |

Thanks for the tip. The issue was that several packages I thought had installed successfully, including OpenRC, had not. Once I sorted that out, the system is good to go. Thanks! |
