Hello,

I recently have been trying to upgrade to Gnome 3.8 (only to find out that the newest version is now Gnome 3.10).

Anyhow, because I have not done an emerge --sync in a long time (over 90 days since last one), I ran into some.....interesting problems.........as expected.

I ran emerge -avDuN --keep-going world in order to upgrade to Gnome 3.10. I do not have the output of this, but in essence it pulled in about 300 packages (combination of new slots, upgrades, etc.). Only 100 of these emerged successfully, and then it crashed with a [Multiple package instances within a single package slot error.

I tried to emerge a few of the packages individually (unfortunately, can't remember which ones), and now upon running emerge -avDuN world I get this error below:

Code:

# emerge -avDuN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "media-libs/libpng:0/0=".
(dependency required by "dev-qt/qtgui-4.8.5-r1" [installed])
(dependency required by "dev-util/cmake-2.8.11.2[qt4]" [installed])
(dependency required by "sys-devel/llvm-3.3-r3" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "media-libs/mesa-9.1.6[llvm]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "media-libs/cogl-1.16.2[gles2]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "media-libs/clutter-gtk-1.4.4" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-extra/gnome-documents-3.10.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps-3.10.0[tracker]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-3.10.0[extras]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

I cannot find what package media-libs/libpng:0/0= is, or how to install/upgrade it. This looks like an odd error, especially since the newest available stable version of libpng is 1.6.8. The current attempt at a solution I am working on is to upgrade each of the packages that appear in this error, but I am not sure if this will work....

Any ideas?

@krinn:
Thanks for replying, I checked out the thread you left, and entered the command as suggested in the post you referenced.

Here is the result of that:
Code:

# emerge -1pv libpng:0 libpng:1.5

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] media-libs/libpng-1.6.8:0/16  USE="apng (-neon) -static-libs" ABI_X86="(64) (-32) (-x32)" 0 kB
[ebuild   R    ] media-libs/libpng-1.5.17-r15:1.5  USE="apng (-neon)" 0 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB

I tried an emerge -avDuN world again and it still gives a similar result:

Code:

# emerge -avDuN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "media-libs/libpng:0/0=".
(dependency required by "media-libs/libwebp-0.3.1" [installed])
(dependency required by "net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.2.5" [installed])
(dependency required by "net-libs/gnome-online-accounts-3.10.2" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.10.3[gnome-online-accounts]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.10.4" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gdm-3.10.0.1" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

If you really just enter the command as-is, then you really need to read portage manual to understand your system.
And while you are reading the manual to see where you fail, re-enter the command without the p switch to really try to fix your issue.

I apologize if I sound like a complete Gentoo noob when I am on this forum. Half the point of coming to this forum is to find help with problems (or so I thought), and I use this forum as a last resort only if I can't figure anything out myself. Sorry for wasting your time.

FYI: I actually did remove the -p and emerged the aforementioned packages....after my previous post. This did not help the issue.

As I said before: this problem only came up when I started upgrading from Gnome 2.32 to Gnome 3.10. I finally got "emerge world" working now, except there are a few slot conflicts I need to deal with manually.

Solution:
In any case, I figured out that if I mask the package media-libs/libpng:0/0 in "package.mask", it makes this problem go away. I read a similar post someplace else on these forums and this seemed like a working solution for some with the same (or similar) problem.
