Ctrl - Alt - Fn shortcut causes kernel panic

If I try to switch terminals using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl Alt Fn (any Fn) I get a kernel panic. It switches terminals and briefly shows a login prompt for less than half a second then panics.

Using chvt works just fine from tty and x to other terminals, back to x, etc.

I have no other keyboard issues and all other shortcuts work just fine.

I'm really clueless here...

Without more information I can only give the advice to try to rebuild a kernel (from scratch, e.g. a new config) and try that. If that doesn't help of seems like too much help try to get the actual error (either a core dump or a picture of the screen that contains the panic).
If you post that error here maybe someone is able to get an idea what fails. The better way would most likely be to open a bug against the kernel (upstream that is) and follow the debugging instructions you'll most likely get.

Just a guess, some kind of framebuffer doing that?

Recompile your kernel, and disable FB and KMS. I think you CAN work it out without a kernel change, by modifying your grub.cfg but I'd just take the crap off from kernel.

If he uses the open drivers, then disabling KMS may disable his ability to run X. If he is using the closed drivers, he should try using the open drivers to see if they also manifest a problem.
