If I download something using torrents is goes very slowly (~25Kb/s) until a certain time at night. Downloads from sites go normal at about 800Kb/s. My ISP obviously knows I am downloading from torrent users.

My question is two-fold.

1. How do they know I am using torrents - is it just that I am transferring data from one user to another?
2. How do I stop it?

Force Encryption just makes it goes slower btw

They know your downloading torrents from the protocol and ports being used. Most torrent programs default to the same port ranges, change the port to a lower range that's shared by other programs.

You can do a search, there are sites that give tips on avoiding ISP throttling.

One of the other things they do is monitor how many connections you make. Bittorrent has a tendency to make 50+ connections so it's pretty easy to detect. You can change this behaviour in the torrent client but if you set it too low you wind up throttling yourself.

I used glasnost to check if my ISP is throttling it but it says no

Check to see if the ports your using for bit torrent are being forwarded by your firewall by visiting Open Port Check Tool.

The Internet is always faster at night. This is because the other users, who clog up the pipes with their porn and spam, are mostly asleep in bed.

But yeah, the ISP is probably throttling your torrents too.

I have no idea what "Kb/s" means. I bet Butts McCracken does not know either. It could stand for kelvin times barn per second, or keg beer per second. Probably just a matter of PEBCAK. :P

ADSL2 (+) I guess ...
500k up is not good for torrent, you could try to tweak your modem, like lowering the SNR, if you have access to it; but maybe it is the link between the DSLAM and the ISP that has too much traffic during the day... if that is the case you cannot do too much about it.

Can you get the modem stats? (SNR, attenuation, etc)
My provider is deploying VDSL2 here and offers 20Mb down 10Mb up for only 5€ more than what I pay now, just look around to see if there are other ISP in your area offering higher speeds like VDSL2.
