This looks like a sufficent catch-all bucket.... 
Recently (and I've forgotten exactly how long ago, but it's beena little while at least) eix's output changed so that the "background" color is a bright orange, which makes things difficult to read. Was this intended? Is it something I did (unintentionally), and can hopefully undo?

I don't have that behavior. Maybe it is a setting someplace? |

I'm sure it has something to do with the terminal profile, but it seems to me that there must be a way to (permanently) change it. I just don't know what it is.

I had to play with /etc/eixrc/02bg file
Just make sure it contains

An orange background color is rather strange, but it may depend on your terminal and its settings. Please have a look at the section "BUGS (and sort of FAQ)" in the eix manpage. There you will find the recommendation of v_andal, which is probably right for your terminal, but also some more information. For a more verbose explanation, see the description of the variables TERM_ALT*, SOLARIZED, COLORSCHEME*, DARK, TERM_DARK, and COLORFGBG_DARK on the eix manpage.
Edit: I conjecture that you are using a 88 color terminal, but eix assumes 256 colors. If you use rxvt-unicode, I suggest to reemerge it with the 256-color USE-flag set. |

The file didn't exist. Creating it and adding the above content gives more sane output.
