Is your state solvent?
Quote:
Alaska is in the best condition, she found. Followed by South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming.
Another source noted the energy boom at least in some of them.
Quote:
The five states with the lowest-ranked fiscal condition are New Jersey, ranked last, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts and California, which is ranked 46th.
#41 is WV. #42 - #50 are Blue. (#s 6 - 10 include 2 Blue states).

Hey little pony, when the Soviet Union was around the Democrats state were labelled red and Republican states blue. The colours changed sometime after the fall of the USSR.

If I were to pick outdated national flags to represent the Democrats and Republicans they would be the Soviet Union flag for the Democrats and the Nazi Germany flag for the Republicans.

My state was higher on the list than I expected. It seems like many of the top states on the list are swing states like mine. Maybe that says something for compromise? or maybe that says something for value of a stalemate?

States are not businesses, their purpose is to serve the people, not turn a profit.

Same for businesses. Turning a profit ensures that a business will be able to continue fulfilling its purpose over the long haul with minimal impact to people.

Profit is not just whats leftover for the fat cats. Profit is what will ensure growth and emergency funding for the future. Any responsible organization must turn a "profit" or keep a reserve. Even NON-Profits keep large reserves for the future.

My state is #44. Every year we have what the governor likes to call a "Structural Deficit", which is just a fancy phase for "We want to spend more money than we have, so we are raising your taxes." Our governor has spent his entire 2 terms as governor campaigning for president, so look out.

You don't understand solvency. Even non-profit agencies need to be solvent.

working paper. meh.

The thing that the top 5 have in common is that the number of people there could all fit a square block in NYC.

So what? More people, more revenue. Unless the urban model isn't nearly as sustainable as some would have others believe.

My guess is that those states likely get high federal subsidies per capita. In alaska's case, the 10 people who live there farm a lot of oil.

You have the same thing in Canada. The highest GDP/capita is the Yukon and the Northwest territories (population: a crowded bar in Toronto). It's all mining and oil up there.

Oil isn't farmed by random people who happen to homestead 50 acres. It is drilled for by fairly large companies (I don't dare say they're all multinationals).

Also note that there are many Blue states which choose to not farm their oil. They aren't even using 100% of oil sales in their state to fund alternative fuel research. It is completely poor policy.

Federal subsidies are paid for by others. So a state consuming more than its fair share is a drain on the whole. It doesn't take much to figure out that will eventually end badly for the state living beyond its means. The problem is they don't have to care. They aren't held accountable.

That's a definite improvement over the current system.

Hawai'i, yes. Along with New Jersey, and plenty others. But Alaska actually produces a lot of money because of their resources.

Ohio makes pork and soap. Iowa makes ethanol and electricity from wind.

You guys can change your colours as often as you like. But in that little rabbit warren you call a country, everybody is just brown. Between the legs as well as between the ears.
