Mmmmm. Seal sashimi!

I prefer seal sausages with cale and potatoes. And hot mustard.

Baby seals. They only want the babies, because they have soft, plush fur.

Meanwhile, the Japanese have 250 dolphins trapped in some harbor, ready to be killed off.

Provided 250 doesn't threaten the population, I have no problem with them eating dolphin.

In my opinion, dolphins and whales are too intelligent for us to be treating them as food. We should consider them fellow sentient beings, and we should grant them protected status.

It's indecent. Those creatures have the potential to evolve into something as intelligent as we are. They're probably as smart now as our Australopithecine ancestors.

Also, it's not like there's an over-abundance of them.

I can't tell if you're serious. It sounds like you're mocking those who are trying to get animals the equivalent legal status as corporations, since I perceive you to not normally favor that POV.

I did note that I was only OK with it as long as it didn't endanger the species (same position regarding whales... I think they're more at risk if not endangered).

'Nuff not said if they're arrogantly and needlessly endangering a species.

It's their land, their national waters.

And the dolphins are not endangered.

Fuck that; it's a sentient species. They are being primitive savages and need to leave the dolphins and whales the fuck alone. They cite tradition, but that's no excuse. What if the people of New Guinea wanted to have an annual "round up and barbecue the Nips" festival? How would they feel about that?

The whales will still get their chance to evolve. We humans are simply a selection pressure.

Seriously? You're going into complete authoritarian mode because they eat animals that you like? They're not cannibals, so how is eating dolphins different from eating a cow. pig, sheep, chicken, fish, seal, walrus, etc etc etc...

This may be true.

When the last glacial period came on, humanity (Homo egaster/erectus) was divided into two parts: the people in the north where everything turned to ice, and the people in the south where everything turned to sand.

While many people in the north were wiped out, many others found pockets of land that was not covered by glaciers, and continued to live somewhat like before. Only the strong, tough, smart, and self-sufficient could survive. They became Homo neanderthalensis and turned white-skinned and fair-haired because they were living in an ice-bound hell.

Similarly, some of the people in the south (Africa) found pockets of vegetated lands and continued to live as before. However, most of them saw their environment turn into desert or arid savannah. Nearly all of these people died off. Some managed to survive, however, if they were fast, sneaky, smart, and were naturally herd-like. These people could adapt from the comparative life of luxury they had before, by ganging up on other animals and people to kill and eat them. These became Home sapiens and turned black and bushy-haired because they were living in the blazing sun and sweating their balls off.

Homo sapiens eventually killed off all the other people living in the nice parts of Africa, and took over their vegetated land. Then they expanded out of Africa and went about murdering everybody else, raping and pillaging as they went, gradually diluting the traits that helped them survive the African desertification with the traits that had helped the Neanderthals survive the glaciation.

A pocket of Neanderthals did manage to survive, however. These are the people we know as Finns.

You know what I mean. It was desertified. Much of it was in fact a desert, and most of it became dry, barren grassland unsuitable for primate habitation. Instead of being able to eat fruit, nuts, roots, and plentiful small game, people had to hunt, and in sparsely-vegetated land, that is very difficult. It must be done in large numbers, so you can surround the prey. Or, you must be able to chase it to death. The existing people were not fast enough, smart enough, or collaborative enough to do that. They died.

One individual was blessed with a mutation that enabled one family, one clan, one tribe, to be successful. They flourished where others either died off or were killed by these people. That's what genetic science shows. Everybody on the planet can trace their genes back to a single individual who existed at this particular time.

Prior to this event, there had been great diversity. Numerous human species were living at the same time. Some scientists have described it as a "Lord of the Rings like world". But then the big die-off caused by the glacial period, including the desertification of Africa, provided a crucible from which only two species emerged: H. sapiens and H. neanderthalensis. Then, the thronging, herd-like, tribal Africans also eradicated the Neanderthals.

Actually, there was another near-extinction that happened, when there still weren't very many H. sapiens and they were mostly expanding Eastward along the shores of Indian Ocean. Nobody's sure what it was, but humanity was decimated down to about 80,000 individuals. It is thought to possibly have been a volcanic eruption in that region. I think disease is more likely.

Anyway, the point was that natural selection pressure, as somebody mentioned, can be a good thing from certain perspectives.

Wow, so you weren't just blowing smoke. OK, a related question. What do you use to determine whether or not a species that is not endangered should or shouldn't be eaten? Since you don't think either whales or dolphins should be eaten, I'm guessing you extend that to primates and elephants? But where is the line drawn? What makes an animal "dumb enough" to eat?
