Quote:
It is the first time the country’s ultrasecret signals intelligence agency has strayed from its standard assurance that it does not “target” the electronic communications of Canadians.

A CSE spokesman said the statement is an initial response to increased media attention and public interest in the organization following the disclosures by former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden.

Leaked documents Snowden stole from the NSA have revealed a vast, global and often illegal electronic spy net operated by the NSA and its allied agencies, including the CSE. It includes the capture and storage of millions of Internet users’ online travels — metadata — from browsing history to email activity.

The CSE says additional information about how it operates is to be posted in coming months, “to share more information about our organization in as transparent a manner as possible while still respecting our security obligations.”

But experts say the effort is largely government mantra that does nothing to address issues raised by the Snowden leaks.

“It is no longer an adequate response to reproduce ‘Surveillance Law 101’ boilerplate summaries and to refuse to address the astonishing facts,” said Craig Forcese, a leading scholar on national security law at the University of Ottawa.

“The question is not whether CSEC and CSIS know the law. It is whether they followed it.”

Nor does the statement address any of the concerns raised in the Snowden leaks about metadata collection, or about the use of CSE’s foreign intelligence partners for information exchanges about targets, including Canadians of national security concern, said Wesley Wark, a security intelligence expert at the University of Ottawa.

Oh, they all do it. USA at least has enough class to start pointing the finger at everybody else. I think will find out this is quite widespread.

I'll normally try to enable 1-3 that seem reasonable, then I move on. If I _really_ want to see it, I may try for more, but it is often easier to just find a different source.

I would have provided a different source, but I work for Canadian foreign intelligence. Soon it won't be so easy to catch us, because we are moving from javascript to secret advanced technologies.

How do you think the CSE is doing the spying? Yep, it's all javascript...

Pretty much. Primary, content delivery, and then whether or not the content source (video, ...?) may be external.

They keep exporting their sonic terrorism to the world. Celine Dion, Anne Murray, Justin Bieber... they need to be watched.

They are just waiting for the day when they can invade us.

I listening to an audiobook (can't recall the title) in which the U.S. has collapsed into anarchy and the Candians have put up a giant fence to keep us out.

That is certainly the only way a US-Mexican border fence will be completed, because the Republicans certainly aren't going to get it done.

There is a fence. They lift it up with a car jack and go under it.

If we get another Democrat in the White House in 2016, they will probably finish building the fence and make it sure, because they'll be using it to keep people from escaping.

Escape to where? Europe? South America? Canada? Show me this place which would remain "less bad" than the US.

You may have a healthy economy. I don't follow economies outside the US all that closely.

I'm thinking Argentina. That's where the Germans went, and the whitened the place up quite a bit.

I follow as close as I need and am interested. Insofar as it impacts our economy, but not further. Other than not wishing ill-will on anyone, the economy of other countries is not my concern. That is for the concern of the country and its citizens.

Based on admittedly limited knowledge, I wouldn't consider any country in South America an improvement. Many may be nice places to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.
