Hi szatox.
Don't you know eix for instance, could do much more than only this, for you. No need to miss options from apt-cache search if you know how to use it right.
app-portage/eix

I do know eix and I like it, but so far I couldn't make it return ebuilds that install an executable with specified name. Like in "what should I emerge to get lsusb?"
Once I have an executable installed, I can find related packege with equery, but at this point I don't care anymore. And it seems I still need google's help to get started. It's clumsy.
I'd be really greatfull if you could give me a hint on this matter
Also, since we are at eix and ebuilds, descriptions are IMO too sparse. Like if the devs assumed the users browse repo and need tooltips to know what a package they're looking at does.
For me it tends to work the other way, I try to find the package I need with keywords related to what I expect the tool to do. Sorry, no example right now. |

Go Arch, you're gonna like it

users who have found ways around this for other distributions that don't report programs via bin pkg name are though. that will do the majority of that work for you. i suggest we start building that kind of info up in our glorious wiki. |

There have been one or two projects doing the same for Gentoo already; can't remember what right now (zapto closed iirc) but it's been done, and likely is still out there. It's not really good for a wiki, since things change so frequently: it makes more sense to query a website that stays current with the tree. |
