PostPosted: Wed Nov 27, 2013 9:48 am    Post subject: [SOLVED]Upgraded to gnome 3.10 and failed to start gdm Reply with quote

I'm using gnome-light 3.8 and want to try gnome-light 3.10 from gnome-next overlay.

All packages compiled successfully, but start gdm.service with systemd or run startx command give me "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" message.

I had run revdep-rebuild and emerge @preserved-rebuild, changed nvidia-drivers from 325.15 to 331.20, still same error.

There were errors in logs, but I don't know which is the critical one.

So I post my info here, hope someone could point it out.

Thanks.

emerge --info

i dont know what exactly the problem is, i only see g-s-d and gnome-shell segfaulting.
does it work if you launch a session with a new user and a clean environment ?

maybe the problem is nvidia binary driver, try with nouveau or even with plain fbdev to see if it works that way.

cheers

It failed with new user too.

I'll compile again with more safe CFLAGS and LDFLAGS, and alternative video driver, hope it'll help.

Thank you.

Yeah, has to do something with the graphics card driver; because of XSyncBadAlarm. I've seen a report that upgrading the graphics card driver to the latest version would help.

@OP: Which version do you have of x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers? Can you try the newest version as well as a slightly older version? (Or if you don't need gaming performance, Nouveau is indeed an option)

I tested with 331.20 and 325.15, they both worked nicely with gnome 3.8 .

Today I tried nouveau but still no luck.
Fisrt I switched to nouveau to make sure it worked with gnome 3.8, and then upgrade to 3.10.
But same XSyncBadAlarm error happened.

That's odd, can you try to obtain backtraces for the trap / segfault?

I rebuilt gnome-3.10 related packages with -ggdb.

Startx as normal user using nvidia-drivers, it generated four core files.
I uploaded log files to pastbin.

core.4944 http://pastebin.com/K7TBymYn
core.4974 http://pastebin.com/ngniN6cS
core.5109 http://pastebin.com/fuf5GykL
core.5111 http://pastebin.com/eu8R8Vfa

Nouveau/vesa generated core files too, and they looked in same way.

I found a similar bug report here https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1010639 , not sure it's a same problem.

Tell me if more info needed.

Thanks.

In http://pastebin.com/K7TBymYn we see at line 207 that screen = 0x0 (not set).

We find the function from that at line 977 in the file https://github.com/GNOME/gnome-desktop/blob/master/libgnome-desktop/gnome-rr.c#L977. On line 986 of that same file you'll see it try to access something from screen, more specifically screen->priv->proxy; but, as screen is not set we cannot access it.

So, we walk the stack of function calls; the first (#1 0x00007f2295cd279d in gnome_rr_screen_set_dpms_mode) still has it set to 0x0, the second one (#2 0x00007f22881453a4 in backlight_enable) doesn't even set it. Let's look there.

We are at line 924 of the file https://github.com/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/blob/master/plugins/power/gsd-power-manager.c#L924 where we see the call on line 929, it seems to get the screen parameter (first one) from manager->priv->rr_screen; so, we have to look one step further in the parent function (#3 0x00007f228814a24f in on_rr_screen_acquired). Let's take a look at line 2255 and onward; we see that the screen gets set at line 2263 and the function call to our other two functions happens at line 2276.

So, I think that there is something wrong with "gnome_rr_screen_new_finish" on line 2263 as I don't see much else that could go wrong there. Looking at the other file again at https://github.com/GNOME/gnome-desktop/blob/master/libgnome-desktop/gnome-rr.c#L901 we see that it gets an asynchroneous result. This means that, somewhere else in the code (which I won't hunt for now) the new screen is made and that it gets obtained in this part of the code once the screen is made.

Now, what's interesting to note is that thee second parameter of this "gnome_rr_screen_new_finish" is called with NULL; whereas we see that is the parameter where the error would be passed to. So, in order to know our error we will want to catch that error and have it output such that you are able to see it in journalctl and/or when running it manually. I'm cheating by taking a look how this was done in another place (https://mail.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2013-September/msg01972.html); so, by writing this same piece of code in our other plugin, I can provide you with a patch:

https://gist.github.com/TomWij/76cbbde9f5109256dfc7

You can put it in a file in /etc/portage/patches/gnome-base/gnome-settings-daemon/ (create those directories) then emerge gnome-base/gnome-settings-daemon again.

Can you try this patch out and provide journalctl output, if possible also stdout, stderr and gdb output from gnome-settings-daemon? Good luck!

Thank you for your time and explanation, TomWij.

Though I cannot understand the code thing completely, but I'll apply the patch and get logs when I get home.

Hi, here is the log in /var/log/message.
I run startx in console and no error message in console.

gsd didn't cause segfault this time, gnome-shell did.
So I think no gdb output of gsd?

Yes, it doesn't crash because the code throws out a warning instead and stops with what it was trying to; yielding:

Quote:
Dec 3 20:15:47 gentoo gnome-session[11477]: (gnome-settings-daemon:11512): power-plugin-WARNING **: Failed to create GnomeRRScreen: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

Seems the problem lies elsewhere with another process that doesn't respond thrugh dbus; so, the problem does not lie with gnome-settings-daemon.

We should focus back on the X Window System error that's going on, which the other crash distracted us from; as that's what is causing the screen is gnome-settings-daemon to not be made.

Dec 3 20:15:47 gentoo gnome-session[11477]: (Details: serial 969 error_code 166 request_code 145 minor_code 9)

The above is where the main problem happens, but it's not clear where that happens in the code and why; but that is explained right afterward:

Quote:
Dec 3 20:15:47 gentoo gnome-session[11477]: (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
Dec 3 20:15:47 gentoo gnome-session[11477]: that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.

Can you try to debug gnome-session like this:

Code:
GDK_SYNCHRONIZE=true gdb gnome-session

Then you need to set the breakpoint:

Code:
b gdk_x_error

Then you can start debugging:

Code:
run

Then after it breaks you can do the following if all goes well:

Code:
bt

That will give you a backtrace that highlights the real problem that causes the X Window System error.

OK, but how should I run "GDK_SYNCHRONIZE=true gdb gnome-session" ?

Start a non Gnome session, run it in the session or just press Alt+F2 on Gnome's "Something gone wrong" screen?
Haven't done this before.

Make sure that the login manager (gdm) and all GNOME things (gnome-*) are not running anymore, then I think you should be able to run that as well as run gnome-shell.

Haven't found documentation for gnome-session; but, there is documentation for gnome-shell: https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging

I think I failed to catch the error message.

First I type "X" in one console to start a X session, with only a black screen.
Then export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0 in another console.

I ran gdb command in the later console, and I marked my input and note as bold text.

As a last resort, the above appears to be a trap in gnome-shell; so, I suggest trying gdb on gnome-shell as well to see if the crash perhaps manifests itself there.

I think somehow gnome-shell's output gets routed through gnome-session looking at the system messages...

I'll debug gnome-shell and post error messages if I catch them.

Thanks for all the help, learned a lot.

Wow, I finally got this problem fixed.

In fact it's same to below problems, I just missed them days ago.

Have to set /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/cursor/active to false in dconf.

For startx user, one command is fine.
Code:

dconf write /org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/cursor/active false

For gdm user, add a new setting file in /etc/dconf/db/gdm.d , named 99-cursor-no-active or what you like.
with following content.
Quote:

[org/gnome/settings-daemon/plugins/cursor]
active=false

Then run "dconf update", restart gdm and everything is OK now.
