I am running Gentoo on an AMD64 computer with 8 GB of RAM from within a dm-crypt partition. When I try to emerge Firefox it does so just fine, but when I try to start it from console it just prints the following error message and exits without ever doing anything:

Code:
(process:3543): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed

Output of emerge -pqv

Code:
black@rockshooter ~ $ emerge -pqv firefox

For several versions, I have gotten that message on startup, but Firefox otherwise works for me. A very quick Google search shows Mozilla bugs "GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion `sys_page_size == 0' failed" on startup, for version 7 and earlier and Does not disable glib slice allocator with glib >= 2.35. Startup warning. which may be relevant.

I have the same problem. Even not from command line, firefox just crashes my kde and I am forced to login again.

One more weird that happened. I have stable version amd64. For some reason it tried to install version 30 which is not stable. The same crashes I had with version 30 too.

I do not have a problem with anything crashing. The OP seems to be unable to start Firefox, but did not report an X or KDE crash either.

Hi everyone, I turned to doing other stuff and haven't had time to get to make Firefox run on my system until now. I'm returning to this now and answering your posts.

Everything goes fine.

Reading the second bug report I saw several suggested fixes. Here's how they went:

  1. Starting Firefox in safe mode didn't work.
  2. Setting environment variable G_SLICE=always-malloc didn't work.
    Code:

    (process:7111): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed
    Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 14: reading configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.
    WORKER ERROR DURING SETUP Error: Failed to load script (nsresult = 0x8000ffff)
    WORKER ERROR DETAIL @resource://gre/modules/osfile.jsm:23
    @resource://gre/modules/osfile/osfile_async_worker.js:16
    @resource://gre/modules/osfile/osfile_async_worker.js:395

Also, this happens on Firefox 24 as well as 29, 30 and 31. I haven't been able to start any of these versions.

No KDE crash indeed.

How did you go man?, are you still seeing the old `GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed` when you start firefox ? .. I see it when I start firefox from a terminal and in the Xorg.log o,0 _but_ firefox still works ok ...

Anyway man, good to meet you, I'm new in here so maybe I'll see you around.

OK, so I recently decided to update my system. I'll put Firefox to update and see how it goes.
