Back (again) at trying to install Gentoo with new "stuff."
Now, I'm having problems with my "Ralink RT5390R 802.1 bgn Wi-Fi Adapter" (in my new HP Pavillion 500, AMD64 desktop). Besides the Gentoo LiveDVD (AMD64)... in which neither a wireless or ethernet network is apparently detected by the DVD (udev?), I DID try "System rescue CD," no internet connect there either.
In the spirit of seeing if I could boot up with UEFI (as you may be aware, Windows 8 version of a bios) & an external USB 3 hard drive (yet some problems to be resolved; i.e., how to handle dual os's in a workable manner), I also tried Ubuntu Studio live DVD (all of this in "legacy" mode, though I did not actually install), & it configured wireless for me, all I had to do was enter my router key... then I also temporarily installed Debian Wheezy & Mate... on the external hd, which wouldn't connect with wireless, but would via ethernet (the installation more or less worked; Gnome 3 does apparently not like my AMD64 Radeon integrated graphics card  ). Very puzzling. 
Any suggestions welcome!

P.s., I think I read awhile ago, something about an RF kill switch...? (not sure of the relevancy, but thought I might ask, just in case...) |

i had troubles at times with this as well... i ended up using System Rescue CD to do the install
http://www.sysresccd.org/Download
though i know for a fact the older versions of the LiveDVD offered a better way to connect to the internet via usb wi-fi adapter... you may also have to go into the kernel and have it where it recognizes USB adapters as wifi too |

As I (more or less) said, no luck with the System Rescue CD either... Re your last suggestion, perhaps I should try an older version of the LiveDVD (I am using the Gentoo 20121221 version... My apprehensions are that my cpu is a fairly new one... (i.e., compatibility)??? & perhaps you could, if you would, explain a little more about going into the kernel... etc.? & one note, even if I could get this machine to connect via ethernet, at least long enough to install, that would be more than good too!

What does lspci say about your interfaces?
The DVD is about a year old. It will not contain drivers for hardware newer than that.
With new hardware, System Rescue CD is your best bet but the question still stands.
Sneakernet works for installing too but its much nicer if you can get the install target on the internet.

It was added to the kernel in the middle of last year but wifi setup depends on your wifi encryption.
With the right setup, this should work.
It should appear in as the kernel module is loaded.

Ok, I'm back after trying a boat load of "options." I could not get the Gentoo LiveDVD to configure either my wired or wireless NCI... I did get my USB 3 hard drive install of Debian to do so (by going to https://wiki.debian.org/rt2800pci & installing the driver), & I tried installing that way, got the stage 3 file/s, unpacked them, but could not do the chroot... I then tried Knoppix liveDVD... same situation problem (with some variation)... & of course, I now think (rightly or wrongly) that the simplest answer is for Gentoo to have the most up to date wireless & ethernet drivers included (i.e., updated).... & yes, I did try the Gentoo minimal install CD (no luck there, either)...
So I guess my MAIN question is... is there a Gentoo update in the works available... & or is there someplace/one/s I could make such inquiry? But perhaps there is another way (I've run out of possibilities... which is probably not saying very much at all  ).

P.s., it was the most recent Knoppix liveDVD (v.7.2) that worked on my machine as far as recognizing my (wireless) internet connect, v. 7.0 did not. (& I forget if I mentioned, but that the SystemRescue CD would not configure my NCI). |

There are always Gentoo updates in the works but not of them are likely to solve your problem in the very near future.
It doesn't matter.
If you want a 64 bit Gentoo install, you need a 64 bit kernel on the boot media. If you want a 32 bit install, then a 32 bit boot disk is preferred but a 64 bit kernel with 32 bit support works too.
The chroot command becomes | Code: | | linux32 chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash |
Attempting to chroot from a 32 bit install media to a 64 bit chroot, fails every time. The 32 bit system cannot run 64 bit software.
I suspect this is what you were trying to do. Knoppix is 32 bit, I don't know about your Debian.
Get System Rescue CD. This provides both 32 bit and 64 bit kernels, its based on Gentoo and has good wireless support.
If there is a beta version with a newer kernel than the stable version, get that.

Yes I tried the stable version (wouldn't work, & because of the error msgs, I rather suspected what you said, re the bit compatibilities), but I'm now downloading the beta version of SystemRescueCD, will give it a try.
