Hi,
Yes I've seen a number of other "skype alternative" threads, but they're either pretty old or going in a direction I didn't like.
Here's what I want:
- Open Source
- Based on an open communications standard which can go through any firewall (http/https, including xml through http,...)
- VOIP/shared video/shared desktop
- Easily implemented by a non-public service.
- Send a link to one or many partners, they open ANY browser and hit the link, and it works. No pre-installed software necessary.
- Can easily use multiple servers. Meaning, not tied to a single account.
I'm thinking of something like Jitsi or Skype, only not based on any single service and not requiring a download that hangs around. I'm not so much worried about things hanging around in a cache as much as being able to use a computer you don't own.
My wife has family in Colombia, they don't have computers or even decent Internet in their town. Instead people use what I think of as an Internet cafe, they pay a little money and get an hour or whatever in the cafe, complete with a Windows-based computer with webcam.
I'd like to get away from the idea of a server at all, but that would require installed clients at both ends and that seems mutually exclusive to me.
So I'm thinking of maybe some sort of XMPP server and run Jitsi from the clients, only I wish Jitsi were some sort of html5 app or something browser-based.
Any ideas? |
