I've been using this laptop, a T520 Thinkpad, with Gentoo on it for a couple of years with no problems. Last week X locked up on me once. Shocked as hell, it's been completely stable for me on all my Gentoo boxes for a long time now. Today X locked up on me every half hour or less. I ran memtest86+ and it passed. Here is the last line of the log every time it crashes
Code:

(EE) [dix] SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: unable to find touch point 0

That's the only thing out of the ordinary I've been able to find. I'm using the xf86-input-evdev driver and I have the touch pad itself turned off (the nub is so much better). Things I tried:

    rebuilding xorg-server and all xorg-drivers
    downgrading the evdev driver
    downgrading xorg-server

Not sure where to go from here. I found a redhat bug from last year that seems to be similar.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=839079
I am not using the nouveau driver.

I can reliably get X to crash by going to turnitin.com for some reason.

Will post emerge --info and X log afterwards if my laptop will allow.

Not sure where to start looking for a solution. Any ideas?

Hello,

Your INPUT_DEVICES variable seems not to be up-to-date. On my thinkpad, my configuration in /etc/make.conf is

Code:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"

after that, you need to rebuild xorg-drivers, and don't forget to update you /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use evdev :

Code:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier  "keyboard-all"
        Driver      "evdev"
        Option      "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
EndSection

Hope this helps

That seems to have worked. It didn't lock up for two days. Thank you.
