Can someone please help me. I am having so much trouble with this new Gentoo install. I have been using this distro for over 10 years but this is the first time I've ever had major problems with it. This time the problem is that I get random console errors saying Input/Output errors or error messages stating that the / file system is read only afer using the computer for a few minutes then the computer locks up and I have to power cycle the machine. I've checked log files and I see no errors as far as I can tell in /var/log. This is a new SSD and I ran fsck.ext4 from the Gentoo Live DVD EotWE on the drive and all seems fine. It mostly happens after trying to use portage. |

If you're experienced and willing to try something new, why not have a go at another install using BTRFS instead of EXT4 with an SSD?
see Linuxz87 link below. |

What vendor and model SSD is this? How long have you had it powered on? |

model number is Intel 335 80GB consumer level drive that has not been powered on long. After messing with it last night it seems I only get this problem after I start KDE/XServer. I was able to emerge -e system && emerge -e world last night with X not running with no problem. but afterward when I rebooteed and started KDE/Xserver I ran into that problem again.

see Linuxz87 link below. | I was actually thinking about using btrfs at first but if there is anything I hate about Gentoo it's the long install process, so if I could fix this without reinstalling that would be great. |

I wish I knew once the errors come up the system is pretty much dead and there is nothing I can do except do a hard reboot. |
