I'm sure you'll be thanking the Germans on this board personally

Seems like a good thing. Video playback is so poor, it doesn't look like anything other than a launch. I've never had that kind of playback problem prior to this video.

This is a test platform for the eventual return and reuse of Falcon9 boosters, which in return will exponentially lower the cost of spaceflight.

I think that is this and it is pretty cool. Looks like it landed in the dead center too :D

Holy shit. That is really cool.

Yeah, this is faked, just like the Moon landing. Photoshop.

No, but we thank the English, for inventing fire, metal, and thought, and for having the foresight and good graces to create the United States.

It's faked. Just like the moon landings and Dr. Salk's polio vaccine.

Elon Musk is German?

Or maybe you are referring to the German government contacting SpaceX to launch a series of satellites.

South African Dutch. Close enough. And if you asked Energyman's grandpa, he would recognise that as German. :P

Doesn't matter. Considering the impact the faked moon landing had, this should be even better!

Actually, he claims to be of "Pennsylvania Dutch" ancestry. His father was from Minnesota and his mother was from Canada. He just happened to be born in South Africa because his parents moved there.

I say what's more likely is that his father was a Dutch Nazi (there were like 100,000 of them or more) who fled to South Africa after World War II with forged immigration papers. :P

Whatever he once was, he's U.S.-educated and an American now.

I also don't think Robert Goddard was German.

Yeah, but what did he ever do? Everybody knows the Germans invented liquid-fueled rocketry, created the mathematical models and solved the aerodynamic and thrust problems still used to engineer modern rockets, built and launched the first modern rockets, came up with the idea for multi-stage rockets, invented gyroscopic stabilization of aircraft and gyroscopic 3-plane control for rockets, invented thrust-vectoring, came up with the idea of their use as missiles, for space flight, and for atmospheric research, created the first ion drives, invented the shoulder-fired anti-tank missile, first conceived of the idea of "escape velocity" and calculated it, first conceived of the idea of a heat shield to overcome friction heat upon atmospheric re-entry, first conceived of the idea of using celestial mechanics as a framework for navigation in space, and over 200 other patent-worthy innovations.... oh, no wait, my bad... that was Goddard.

And for SpaceX's expertise in satellite technology

It was Wernher von Braun's dream to send a rocket to the Moon.

Most of them fell well short on London.

This is so cool, and will revolutionize access to LEO and beyond.

My apologies to wildhorse for not posting some of this in a more timely manner. I know how interested you are in real aerospace innovation.

So Orbital Sciences' Cygnus is docked to ISS and SpaceX launched the new and improved Falcon9 1.1, while testing controlled reentry and landing of the first stage. And now SpaceX has released this video of their latest 744 meter Grasshopper test flight. Pretty cool stuff the private sector is accomplishing.

I know it is unlikely, but I'd love to see SpaceX (or someone else) beat governments to Mars (manned for the special ones among us).

Bets on how long before the Chinese steal the designs and the software and very publicly have a similar demonstration of their own?
