snd can't play files

I am trying to play a wav file with snd.
I want to use the snd gui and not other players.
I am getting the following error:

can't play:Invalid argument:cannot set hardware parameter for hardware default


Someone knows what is the problem?
One of the things I noticed is that it tries to access asound.conf file, but I don't have such a file.
How do I configure it?

I am not sure that this is the problem, so if someone has a better idea, I am open to new ideas as well.

Do you know what it considers the default device to be (and if that is a sane choice?)
