Hi guys!
Please recommend me some pieces of hardware, namely a decent soundcard (maximum 100€ price tag) and a wifi card or better USB-dongle, that both run painless with Gentoo. Background is, that I failed to get my Creative CA0132 soundcard working. I also had huge woes with my Ralink Wifi dongle, which was affected by a naughty kernel bug, I suppose. That all annoyed me so hard, that I quit using Linux on this machine. What can I say? Windows 7 works, no problems, but it's also boring and pretty maintainance-intensive. So basically I would like to return, even if that means that I have to invest in new hardware. Oh, and the soundcard is meant for hifi-purposes, maybe an Audigy? But I've read very mixed up reviews with Linux as well. So, any advice is very welcome. _________________ "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous."

Yeah, I know the CA0132 is in the kernel. But it seems not to be maintained at all. I've had it all set up correctly, firmware loading and everything. But no sound

This should be a working USB adapter: TP-Link TL-WN722N. If you prefer PCI instead of USB: DLink DWL G510 (but this is 54MBit only). Maybe for PCIe you should check out DLink DWA-556. All these cards should have an Atheros chipset.

@bbgermany: Thanks. Looks good. I found another one, which I like even better because of its nano form factor: The TP-Link TL-WN725N. It uses Realtek RTL8188CUS chipset. Any suggestions about this? It seems to be supported by Linux, but I am willing to go with the bigger one if that's a better choice.
Now I am still missing a well working soundcard. I didn'T found a single live CD that supported the bloody CA0132 chip. I tried ~2 months ago, even with 3.11 kernel no luck. So does anybody have a good suggestion? _________________ "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous."

Ok, I bought the WIFI adapter, bbgermany suggested. For the soundcard, I took the M-Audio Audiophile 2496, which got nice reviews and has dedicated cinch-connectors.
The Creative SB Z was the last card *ever* I bought from them. High price tag and the worst Linux support ever > bye bye Creative. _________________ "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous."

unless you're doing studio audio stuff, spend $100 on a audio card is pointless. Invest that cash in GPU, CPU or RAM.
$6 usb audio dongle is enough. Or some free pci sound card from a friend/relative should be okay. Heck, what's wrong with mobo's audio? |

To begin with, the output level. Just compare a decent sound card with onboard sound over a decent PA/speaker system. You might not believe it, but I will hear the difference.
I got the M-Audio used for 66 €, just waiting for the arrival, so hopefully next weekend will be Gentoo installation. CPU/GPU is already great, no need to invest any more there. _________________ "Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous."
