This is still a work in progress, but the basics are all there for a successful migration of an ext4 based mdadm mirror set to a new mirror set that uses btrfs for everything including the system root as a subvolume.

I'll probably be doing edits for the next couple of days to get the formatting and details wrung out. Comments from the peanut gallery please....

The page is essentially done. This system has been up and running for a couple of days without any problems. I also had an existing system disk based on an SSD with a btrfs mirror where I backed up to the mirror and then remade the root ssd as a btrfs. That one has also gone through an emerge update and a rebalance of the live system root without any issue.

im actually doing duplicate work of this right now. btrfs /boot && btrfs /

so far only problem observed is missing symlink for /sbin/fsck.btrfs > /sbin/btrfsck

(fixed by ln -s /sbin/btrfsck /sbin/fsck.btrfs)

& requiring /boot be equal to or more than 270MB.

no migration for me. i intend to get btrfs system up, duplicate ext (or what ever) onto btrfs system.

so if you're doing the /boot I'm guessing you are doing grub2?

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Alternate_Install <--- that - JFS + btrfs yes grub2. -jfs-utils + btrfs-progs & the fstab changed to btrfs.

edit: worked perfectly. the real test is time now.... and some funky partition smashings & rebuildings & mass power offs mid system flight.
