I am installing gentoo 1.4 from the live CD and everything goes well til I get to step 11 when after I enter the following command:
scripts/bootstrap.sh
I get the error message: no such file or directory
a pwd command reveals that I am in /usr/portage
an ls command reveals no files in /usr/portage
I'm certain I have connected to the internet in the previous steps.
I did have to use emerge-webrsync to get a copy of the tree.

| Sounds like you maybe skipped a step i would try to do emerge sync and it should be there |

Did you perform step 8 where you tar xvjpf /mnt/gentoo/stage1-*.tar.bz2?
This is where it should get the script from.

| Actually /usr/portage/scripts/bootstrap.sh is part of the portage tree. This file will not be present on your system until you "emerge sync" or use a portage snapshot. |

Actually, I did emerge sync and it kept failing. Failed three times. The message after the third failure suggested I emerge-webrsync, which I did. That seemed to work. But everything came to halt thereafter.

This may seem like a whacky question however are you sure that your ethernet card is detected? Also sometimes I noticed that dhcpcd isn't always automatic on the LiveCD, i have had it detect my ethernet card however didn't fetch an ip from my router. |

Hello folks. I found out what the problem was (I think) . I'm setting up my Gentoo system at home and I'm at work so I may not remember everything. When I was making my partitions and after mkereiserfs I didn't reboot. That may have been the problem.
Also, I may have missed # cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf in this group of commands:
# mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
# cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf
# chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
# env-update
At any rate, I went home and retried everything at lunchtime and when I left, the bootstrapping operation was happlily bubbling away. Thanks to everyone for the help!
