Since the update kwin would immediately crash on startup and restart itself with no desktop effects. Toggling the rendering backend would cause it to crash again. Previous version worked fine.

The fix is to rebuild kde-frameworks/kconfig with dbus support.

Hope this saves somebody else some time.

No error log for us?

To be fair, there's a reason why dbus is default for desktop profile.

I didn't know kwin generated logs (?). Will it be useful if I break it again and post messages from kwin_x11 --replace?

I don't doubt it but I like to turn a lot off by default and enable per package when I need to. I'm a tinkerer.

You might see something if plasma is started directly from tty.

I've back a snapshot and am building again. I'll do the tty launch tommorow.

I've also hit this (hence the rollback)

I'll guess you did *not* install kde-plasma/plasma-meta?

Code:
[ebuild     U  ] kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.18.5:5::gentoo [5.17.5:5::gentoo] USE="display-manager elogind legacy-systray networkmanager* pulseaudio sddm wallpapers -bluetooth -browser-integration -crypt -desktop-portal -discover -grub -gtk -handbook -kwallet% -plymouth -qrcode -sdk -systemd (-thunderbolt) (-consolekit%) (-pam%) (-pm-utils%*)" 0 KiB

Then it is not possible you got the same issue, because kde-plasma/khotkeys has always been part of plasma-meta (unconditional) dependencies.

I'll report back when emerge finishes and post output of depclean

Code:
[ebuild     U  ] kde-plasma/kmenuedit-5.18.5:5::gentoo [5.17.5:5::gentoo] USE="-debug -handbook (-hotkeys%*)" 0 KiB

Yes. You didn't read my above answer? plasma-meta pulls it in anyway.

I wasn't disagreeing with you anyway but, yes you're right. In my case it's the deprecation of xf86-input-keyboard. Some of the same symptoms; I jumped the gun.

Ah, good to know - so there is no mystery to solve how you still got that other 'bug'. ;)
