I have an ancient Celeron 700 desktop with 512MB RAM (maxed out). It's in a remote location so I can't replace it right now, and the user is telling me that it frequently takes 30 seconds or longer to open a Roundcube page in Chrome. Is there anything I can do to speed things up? Looking at top, the CPU is about 95% idle when no one is logged in. Roundcube on the same server in Chrome on my laptop takes just a second or two.

grant123,

I suspect a memory leak somewhere, so its into swapping.
What does the first half a dozen lines of top say?

Look at the memory in use by various applications. Restart the memory hogs as its the only way to free 'leaked' memory.
If swap is present but not in use, its unlikely to be that unless the leaked memory is also locked against being swapped.

I remember having this kind of problem (w/ any application) if there is a hostname problem occurs on box. Do startup time differ too much on other apps?

NeddySeagoon, I will do that on Monday when the system is in use. Right now 'free' says:

-/+ buffers/cache: 108624 404448

seqizz, I'm not sure about app startup times. How can I look into a hostname problem?

grant123,

Somehow, your system need to be able to resolve its own hostname to its real IP address, not just lo.
With a static network set up, you put a line in /etc/hosts like
Code:
192.168.100.20          NeddySeagoon    # Shiny new AMD 6 Core at 3200MHz box
OK, the comment is old now.

If you have a dynamic network setup, your nameserver needs to do this.
How long does it take to resolve your hostname?
Code:
ping hostname
will do.
If it times out, or takes seconds, thats the issue. It should be about the same as ping lo.

'ping system' takes about .070 ms which is about the same as 'ping 127.0.0.1'. My /etc/hosts looks like this:

127.0.0.1 system.network system localhost

The slow system uses 192.168.1.2 on a PCI wireless interface.
