Help with finding specific features in an audio player

I've recently gone totally *nix. On my main workstation I used foobar2000 as my audio player of choice for two very specific reasons, I was able to embed artwork in the audio files themselves - directly from the player, as well as set up a very specific folder hierarchy for my files based on their tags. I'm looking for the same functionality in an audio player on my now gentooified workstation. Any help would be appreciated.

Pointing you to that link is teasing you a bit but the gentoo way is to add that ebuild to your overlay then try to emerge it.

Oh ... that ebuild runs the Windows version in WINE ... thats a bit disappointing.

Yeah, trying to stay away from WINE for something I'll be using constantly. I suppose I could start working on expanding the codec I wrote while bored at work into a media player. Hm, actually... What are people's preferred players in linux? I'm going to fork one. :idea:

Don't fork a media player - thats a lot of hard work. Contribute to one and change it from the inside. That way you may get some help too.

xbmc, vlc, mplayer, mplayer2 and more will all play almost anything. xine is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
Then there are the audio only players too.

You will find that thef all depend on similar or identical libraries because of the *NIX approach of do one thing and do it well.
Sure, there are forks of libraries - but in at least one case Gentoo provides a way for you to choose among the forks at build time.

Not since the days of KDE3 (RIP old friend). Hm, just saw something about a plugin for embedding album art - but it was for a really old build. Wonder if it's a feature now. Thanks! Still, going to work on a fork or maybe my own though, regardless of the workload. I still very much enjoy coding, nothing is more satisfying than building your own tool and having it exactly as you'd like it.

Anyways, thanks for the help fellas. I'll be using Amarok for the time being.

You can also try gmusicbrowser and quodlibet. Both have pretty extensive library management utilities and can create a folder hierachy based on tags. gmusicbrowser also supports embedding of album art.
