I lol'd, and for the first time, soccer didn't bore me to death.

Robot football players compete with the aim of beating humans

pjp, this is maybe the third time that you write "soccer" in a thread. So I can't watch this any longer:

it's called FOOTBALL, not soccer!!!

Sounds like a YP not an MP. When I write soccer, you (apparently) understand the intent. When you write football, it can have more than one meaning. And people criticize us about cultural insensitivity.

True, 'cause I doubt that would even be funny.

football has only one meaning.

soccer isn't even understood in most places.

Then there is handegg also called 'american football'
or 'aussie rules football' also called 'outdoor bar brawl'.

But if somebody writes 'football' only football is meant. Nothing else.

Now go back watch 'standing around wearing heavy body armor'.

Few years ago I managed to get consensus in a bar in Berkeley that fotball is fotball and handegg is handegg. I was so proud.

Demonstrably incorrect on both accounts.

not quite, soccer is usually only understood in countries with english as a first language. Even then most people and governing bodies give their "football" types and regulatory bodies give their sport a different name ("Australian Rules football", "Rugby Football Union", "Gaelic Football") to distinguish it from "actual" football. The one exception to this is in the US. Hence why the US is in the wrong and the rest of the world is correct.

Thank you for proving football does not have one meaning. As for the other, my money is on non-English speaking countries which enjoy criticizing the US include soccer in their repertoire.

Football does have one meaning otherwise they wouldn't have to add different words to change it.

then why is it called American football and not just football. If football really had more than one meaning then the correct name for handegg would just be football, but it isn't, its American Football.
Fact is football is football and one sport is called that, there are plenty of derivatives and to distinguish them from the root game they are given additional wording to distinguish it.

Really? I've never heard it referred to as American Football, except perhaps by someone outside the US.
