Some time back OSS uvd support was announced for the Radeon driver. From what I can tell, this covered r600 and newer, including the embedded HD4200 I have on one of my systems at home. However when I go to the Gentoo Radeon Wiki, there is no uvd firmware listed for the r600 - it kicks in at r700 and newer. I can't quite believe that I can pick up new capability without new firmware.
Does anyone know the score here? _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth

I see now... r600 sounds like a broad tent. Apparently though the embedded HD4200 is called r600, the other name for it is RS880, which is one of the unsupported chipsets fingered on Phoronix in your reference. Fortunately Brigman says it's technical review, not legal. Frequently technical hurdles are easier to surmount than legal ones.
Looking a little more, when the uvd announcement came up on Phoronix, they said "uvd 2 and newer", which the HD4200 was listed as having. After reading around your posted references it appears that they really meant, "uvd2.2 and newer." Maybe if the technical hurdles can be met they can go back to "uvd2 and newer".
I'm going to call this [ANSWERED] because it won't be solved until either the solution is out, or AMD says it can't or won't be done. In the meantime, I guess I could set 'USE="vdpau"' and activate the shader-based video acceleration. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |
