My initramfs uses cryptsetup to open the encrypted device and mount it. This works fine.

However, after issuing an exec switch_root to continue booting, the device disappears! This is exceedingly frustrating, why does this happen? What do I need to do to make the device show up?

Comparing a Slakcware initramfs script with my simple Gentoo script, I see that the Slackware script executes udev at some point. Is this needed to populate the devices properly? What arguments, if any, do I need to give udev in my initramfs?

Solution!

mount devtmpfs at /dev in the initramfs!
