Hello gentoo people,

Maybe some of you could help to solve a considerable graphics performance drop from kernel 3.7.10-r1 to 3.8.13 using "Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Famility Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)" with i965 driver. The outputs of glxinfo and xdriinfo don't change between the two kernels, but still even the glxgears performance drops from the usual 60 FPS to 15. I can't see any changes in kernel configuration which could cause this. Any ideas? Which diagnostics could help to get the usual graphics performance back?

Best wishes.

Verify that direct rendering is working

Code:
# glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

. Look for error messages from Xorg:

Code:
# grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and from the kernel,

Code:
# dmesg | grep drm

. My output from dmesg:

Code:
[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[drm] Supports vblank timestamp caching Rev 1 (10.10.2010).
[drm] Driver supports precise vblank timestamp query.
fbcon: inteldrmfb (fb0) is primary device
i915 0000:00:02.0: fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
[drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

Thanks for the quick reply!

After running the proposed diagnostics I could find a plenty of reports on the exactly same problem in the web. It really seems to be related to kernels after 3.7 and seemingly remains unsolved. Some bug reports:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63589

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63921

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63946

Just hoping this gets fixed soon. It makes even fluxbox sluggish.

Eventually,

I understood to change my rendering to use UXA and got the former acceleration performance back:

Code:
USE="uxa -sna" emerge xf86-video-intel
