My thoughts are, lotto is a redneck 401k or a tax on the poor. At the end of the day, it is gambling. Sometimes you win and other times you lose, however the house is always ahead.

To be fair (and possibly a hypocrite) I do play the occasional game when lotto jackpots reach high numbers. (590m for example). If you want to know more, this late-blooming SPAM removed website should help.

The only gamble I take is buying take away food, 1 in 5 chance of explosive bowels.

Lotto sometimes when I feel lucky, but a lot of the winnings here goes to charity so it's high stakes raffles in a way.

Every pub, club and hotel here has bloody poker machines so I steer clear of gambling, it's very easy to lose your shirt in a beery daze. They should have a law requiring disconnection of speakers, the C64 style tunes drive one balmy.

I play with no expectation of winning. The "entry point" correlates to how good of a day I've had at work :D But usually not less than $100m. Playing doesn't change my lifestyle, but winning would.

I play sometimes.

I invest 5€ in a ticket and be fine with it. I don't expect to win, but I do enjoy the nice, small, soft thrill I get out of it when the ticket is checked.

I never play.

If you want to maximize winnings (of course, I mean expectation of winnings) you of course can't change the odds of winning. however, you can lower the odds of splitting winnings by choosing unpopular combinations (like 1,2,3,4,5,6) and playing when the take home isn't so high (since everyone plays then and you are likely to split).

Amusingly the recent large Powerball had one winning ticket. The subsequent $50m drawing was won by three.

The optimal strategy to maximize expected value is to not play and just keeping your $5 (or whatever).

my combination is a bad example since (1,2,3,4,5,6) is more popular than one would think. anyway, my point stands.

and yes. I employ and agree with your optimal strategy.

I do £1 a week automagically. I never even think about it until I get an email saying I've won. I do the same when the euro millions reaches £100 mill
