I was just curious if it is possible to cross-platform compile packages. I know that it is possible for example to compile all of the necessary gentoo packages ahead of time and just tar-balling them, however is it possible to compile on an x86 machine xfree for a sun box for example?
sorry for the crazy question ahead of time , heehee |

Yes, it is possible, but it's not easy and it's not trivial. Don't let me put you off - it's not magic or anything - but it can be quite time consuming at first, until you understand how everything fits together.
I heard a good idea on these forums a little while ago - get a basic Gentoo working on your target platform, and then use distcc and a cross compiler to build your applications. That way, even if your target is quite slow, you can build X, KDE, whatever, much faster.
Do a search on forums.gentoo.org for 'cross compile' and a few others - I think you'll find a lot of info.
