Yeah, that should mean the next 10 Hobbit sequels will be cheaper to produce. Meanwhile, other than two Islands with a population of a few million, it really isn't going to make any difference to the rest of us. It's akin to the banning of nuclear powered vessels needing a place for shore leave, they will take their business elsewhere.

Yeah, I agree this would never directly impact me.

I'm just hopeful that maybe others will begin to follow suit.

It doesn't matter really since the US and Japan do have software patents. I think you may find that software patent laws are different country to country within the EU. It's a complete mess.

I know they are but that still doesn't change the fact that another country has closed the door on the US/Japan software patent model.
US and Japan have almost identical stance of software patents, nowhere else does. Some places have banned software patents outright, some have some gray area's. The more countries that just declare them invalid reduces the arena's the likes of apple vs samsung can play in. In doing so it protects the customers since patent litigations only hit the customer at the end of the day via increases in cost.

While specific surrounding software patents maybe subtly different between countries in the EU, there are common ground - ie they don't really happen since they are covered via copyright legislation. The gray area's that exist is around firmware especially since from a DO-254 point of view this can be hardware and thus can be patented.

A movie about trade and economic relationships in the EU? I thought that's what Human Centipede was supposed to be (at the 2nd level of interpretation).

I am waiting for the Chinese invasion of New Zealand or some other idiotic threat scenario.
Well done, Kiwis!

more here
The examples of patentable and non-patentable things given there appear to be based on fairly well known European cases. It's not clear the position is any different from the position in Europe regardless of the omission of the fateful words "as such".

Of course, it is all different in the USA.
