Hi,

I'm trying to improve my music playing experience at home and I've started dabbling with UPnP. My (limited) understanding is that I need 3 components: a server, a control and a renderer. No problems with the first 2 so far. I have both MythTV and MediaTomb working as media servers and I can interact with them from other computers on my home network. I also have AndroMote running on my Android phone. It connects to the server and I can play music on the phone itself.

However, it seems that options for the last piece of the jigsaw (the bit that does the playing, which I believe is called a renderer) are more limited. Specifically, I want to connect a PC to my hifi, and I'm after a bit of software that will play music on that PC, but controlled from another device on the network (e.g. an android phone). I only need basic functionality (play, stop, volume up/down). No need for graphics or any other UI as it's all happening on a remote computer.

I've found gmediarender, but the project is no longer maintained (gmrender-resurrect seems to be a more recent fork).

Wondering if any of you fellow gentoo-philes have had any success in achieving this.

OK, I installed gmrender-resurrect (https://github.com/hzeller/gmrender-resurrect). I had to install a couple of dependencies, but it was very straight forward. Got it working in a few minutes. All seems to work fine with my server and control. No ebuild, so I installed it manually in /usr/local. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to teach myself how to write ebuilds!

Hope this is some help to others.
