Gentoomen,

I want to install ImageMagick on a headless machine with no X related programs on it.

According to this page on the ImageMagick website, the --without-x flag will prevent X related tools like import, display and animate from being compiled and installed. How do I accomplish this with portage?

Unsetting the -X flag in /etc/portage/package.use/imagemagick doesn't do anything. I am left with /usr/bin/import, /usr/bin/display and /usr/bin/animate programs which I have no use for and which break some of my scripts.

Here is my emerge --info:

media-gfx/imagemagick-6.7.8.7 was built with the following:
USE="bzip2 cxx fontconfig jpeg lqr openmp perl png truetype zlib -X -autotrace -corefonts -djvu -fftw -fpx -graphviz -hdri -jbig -jpeg2k -lcms -lzma -opencl -openexr -pango -postscript -q32 -q64 -q8 -raw -static-libs -svg -test -tiff -webp -wmf -xml"

Here is the file type of /usr/bin/import, which I want to get rid of:

Quote:

/usr/bin/import: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.9, stripped

As you can see, it's an executable file, not a symlink which might explain it's presence.

Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. Dunno, maybe upstream lied. I saw the --without-x passed to the configure phase when my temporary rebuild with -X use was set. After that I presume all bets are off:

Configure still eventually said...
Code:

checking for X11 configure files...

So, whatever . But my experience with autotools is currently limited. Maybe some additional automagichandwaving was required.

Code:

They built anyway, as you mentioned.

As far as breaking your scripts, what if you made an executable script stub to link replace animate|display|import to in say /usr/local/bin as a workaround?
Code:

#/bin/sh
# null for /usr/bin/animate|display|import

On a first sight, the ebuild seems to do the right thing, so it must be a broken configure script. I'd investigate amongst those line.

You also have the option to use graphicsmagick, it might work for you or not depending on what do you need. It suplantates imagemagick, so you can't have both installed alongside. It also has an X use flag, and maybe this one will work ;)
