I've run into a weird issue (possibly a bug, but possibly just user error) where somehow, I manage to get Gnome Shell confused on when the keyboard should work and when the mouse should work. THIS INCLUDES THE ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD. I highlight that, as I just realized that may be a key to the puzzle. I don't know exactly how to summarize it, so it's hard to search for. Basically, there are times I can somehow manage to get Gnome Shell into a mode where the keyboard will interact with programs, but not the shell, and the mouse will interact with the shell, but not programs. This is particularly troublesome if the screen locks while in this mode. The simplest fix is to just run | Code: | | gnome-shell --replace |
from one of the F- consoles, but that gets old quick.
To give an example of how this works, if this happens, I can still operate a web browser using only the keyboard. I can't click on any links with the mouse, but if I tab around and use the spacebar, it works fine. However, if I Alt+Tab, the keyboard won't continue functioning (I can't tab through the programs, and releasing Alt won't return to the application selected), but the mouse suddenly works (and is, in fact, the only way to get out of the Alt+Tab window, as I now have to click on one of the icons to return to that program). If I pull up the Activities window, I can't type in anything to search, but I can click shortcuts. I found I get in trouble if I try to Alt+F2 to run | Code: | | gnome-shell --replace |
, as there's no way to click out of it, and no way to type in the box. Instead, I have to rely on Ctrl+Alt+F1, logging in, running | Code: | | gnome-shell --replace |
, Ctrl+Alt+F7 back to the GUI, Alt+F2, run | Code: | | gnome-shell --replace |
again, and then Ctrl+Alt+F1 back to the console to log it back out and Ctrl+Alt+F7 back again. If the screen locks while in this mode, keyboard interaction is useless, including the on-screen keyboard.
This appears to be a recent issue, likely occurring after my last major world update a couple of days ago. I'm not 100% sure whether any of the packages included would relate to my issue or not, but the update included the following packages:
