I'm concerned people will become complacent in thinking they've won, subsequently allowing some other abomination to pass. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

Don't forget, while there is a long-term objective of altering public opinion (and thereby enabling a communitarian change of morality about this basic right), in the short-term this is nothing but theater. They knew this wasn't going to pass. The objective is to get the apathetic Democrat base riled up for the mid-term elections, and now they can use the "Newtown Massacre" in their campaign ads against everyone who voted against this.
The reaction clip above is how the neolib demagogues and their sycophantic media are now going to tell the Pied-Piper-following "progressive" echo chamber how they are supposed to feel about it.
They'll probably even find a way to claim the right to bear arms is white racism, despite the fact that blacks are the ones perpetrating firearm homicides at by far the greatest rate (with illegally purchased and unregistered firearms).
I can hear it now: "They're gonna use those guns to put y'all back in chains!!! Teh babies!" _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

You're probably right. He probably got that from a U.S. left-wing authoritarian collectivist propaganda source. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

I saw the same nonsense popping up in DU & TPM right around the time our resident propaganda loudspeaker was spewing that crap. _________________ If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for the problems caused by government, I'd be a fat filmmaker with a baseball cap |

The latest propaganda barrage I've noticed (they're obvious, because you hear the same new spin on something simultaneously from the White House and numerous news outfits) is that the Iraq war was not "questionably justified", but a total fiasco and a complete disaster. I see two reasons for this sudden outburst:
a. The situation in Iraq is starting to go to shit, right on the heels of Obama having made a big show of pulling our troops out (even against the pleas of the Iraqi defense minister). So they're trying to distract from the cause-and-effect relationship there. NBC Nightly News went through a tirade casting it as a completely mismanaged cluster-fuck, noticeably mentioned ZILCH about the "troop withdrawal" that was such big news and prompted much liberal fapping, and even interviewed a maimed soldier (no legs) and somehow prompting him into saying that no, this didn't make him feel like his sacrifice was for nothing.
b. Obama is getting ready to give up on Afghanistan, in a very Vietnam-like way, and he doesn't want to take the blame and be "the President who lost the war in Afghanistan". So, casting the military operations of the Bush Administration (whose main faults were not telling the truth about why they were doing things and not sending enough troops -- both so they could con people in terms of public opinion and budget) as inept and mismanaged. Slimy and deceitful they were. Militarily incompetent they were not. Our extremely low casualty rates compared to similar military operations are testament to that. But this way, they can drum up the anti-war sentiment again, pretend they are righting a wrong, rather than throwing away everything we've tried to achieve, and what so many people gave their lives for. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

The bill was never going to pass. Obama knew it. So did the other guys.
Plain old political theater. Obama was seen by his base as to attempting to doing something. The other guys' base saw them defending their Freedom™.
