It's Soylent but not the green one.
| tfa wrote: | Food is the fossil fuel of human energy. It is an enormous market full of waste, regulation, and biased allocation with serious geo-political implications. And we're deeply dependent on it. In some countries people are dying of obesity, others starvation. In my own life I resented the time, money, and effort the purchase, preparation, consumption, and clean-up of food was consuming. I am pretty young, generally in good health, and remain physically and mentally active. I don't want to lose weight. I want to maintain it and spend less energy getting energy.
I hypothesized that the body doesn't need food itself, merely the chemicals and elements it contains. So, I resolved to embark on an experiment. What if I consumed only the raw ingredients the body uses for energy? Would I be healthier or do we need all the other stuff that's in traditional food? If it does work, what would it feel like to have a perfectly balanced diet? I just want to be in good health and spend as little time and money on food as possible.
I haven't eaten a bite of food in 30 days, and it's changed my life.

| Quote: | THE EXPERIMENT
There are no meats, fruits, vegetables, or breads here. Besides olive oil for fatty acids and table salt for sodium and chloride nothing is recognizable as food. I researched every substance the body needs to survive, plus a few extras shown to be beneficial, and purchased all of them in nearly raw chemical form from a variety of sources. The section on the ingredients ended up being quite long so I'll save that for a future post. The first morning my kitchen looked more like a chemistry lab than a cookery, but I eventually ended up with an thick, odorless, beige liquid. I call it 'Soylent'. At the time I didn't know if it was going to kill me or give me superpowers. I held my nose and tepidly lifted it to my mouth, expecting an awful taste. |

How many geniuses have heard that in the past when they were doing something revolutionary? _________________

We don't really know everything the body needs, and gets, from the foods we eat.
I remember reading about a doctor or scientist who had decided that oxidation is what ages and eventually kills us, and that oxidation is fueled by food, so he's "extending his life" but cutting back his caloric intake to like 400 Calories a day or something, and becoming as inactive as possible to minimize the number he burns. He says he estimates that he's going to live to 150. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

It'll just seem like that.
Haven't read the article, but if he's basing input around RDA - then there's a rather large problem right there. _________________ When you break rules, break 'em good and hard |

But this guy is going to help us find out!!! He is volunteering to prove that we cannot live alone on what he is trying to solely live on . . . right? _________________

Actually IV nutrition is nothing new, some people survived for long periods with total parenteral nutrition, it is not perfect yet.

Remember that guy in the movie Se7en, the one designed to symbolise sloth? I imagine that's how one would end up.
I don't doubt that some advances are made by risky experiment. The proof that peptic ulcers are caused by bacteria and not stress is a case in point, where the scientist swallowed a beaker full of germy yuck to prove his point, and won a Nobel prize. |

Didn't the Nazis already figure this one out? No, theirs was a soylent green experiment, where they fed a bunch of Jews nothing but Jews to see what would happen, and they got rickets and stuff. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

Yes. It was run by SS Agent Orange Jews. |

Even if bought that all you needed were elements to be optimal (which I don't) the life must suck without good healthy food. Arguably, it is harder to find (and more expensive, depending on if healthy food is associated with being a hipster and exploited, or if it's the cheapest - and best alternative out there, like in Bosnia).
I can understand it from the point of breaking clean from bad food habits.
What he is writing about, feeling great, energized and all that, I simply think that he is going through ketosis, which has such effect, but I don't think he will keep it up for more than 2-3 months. |

The long-term effects of Agent Orange were unintentional and not known until later; we fucked up more of our own people with it than the Vietnamese, because we were using it to clear brush around our own bases. The Nazi medical experiments on prisoners, and the similar ones done by the Japanese (unit 731) weren't unintentional.
I can't now find any reference to the specific experiment I'm thinking of. As I recall, prisoners were fed only a powder made from human bodies, to see what would happen. They ended up with various problems including skeletal deformities. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

I seem to recall cannibalism results in BSE type diseases, too. So, Mad Jew Disease. |

If he's really doing it, should shed some light on the supposed benefit of of consuming some of the necessities in natural form (e.g., an orange instead of orange juice). Until then, what an idiot. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.

Wouldn't it be a gas if, after studying it and experimenting in depth, we were to discover we should have been eating dirt all along? _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.
