The phone owning public here demanded it vigorously. I suppose unlocked phones is more important to people here than owning zillions of firearms, otherwise we would be armed to the teeth as well.

Obama just made it illegal to unlock cell phones in January, as part of the updated DMCA.
Now they get a petition and decide that was a bad idea? What is this, head in ass syndrome? Oh, yeah, I forgot. It's "Leading from Behind".
| Quote: | | Starting Jan. 26, it became illegal for consumers to unlock their mobile devices without the carrier's permission because of a change to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The new rule applies only to phones purchased after the ban went into effect. |
Note how they avoid saying, "Signed into law by Obama on Jan. 26."
| Quote: | Amid consumer outcry, a petition was created Jan. 24 that urged the Obama administration to consider making it legal to unlock phones. The petition has since garnered more than 114,300 signatures, leading to Monday's announcement.
"The White House agrees with the 114,000-plus of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cellphones without risking criminal or other penalties," the White House said in a statement. "It's common sense, crucial for protecting consumer choice, and important for ensuring we continue to have the vibrant, competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumers' needs."
Unlocking smartphones is particularly important to users who wish to sell their phones or buy used ones, the White House said. |

I like how Obama goes along with all the corporate initiatives to lock down intellectual property, goes along with the authoritarian initiatives to control the Internet, and wales the piss out of downloaders in court, but minute the lemmingsphere calls him out on something and gets uppity, oh then he's been on their side the whole time and is like, "Yeah, wuttup wi'dat?"
And of course, the lemmings swallow it (Oh, thank you, Obama! He's so awesome! Hope & Change! \o/ ). _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

wait, so copyright office decides people can't unlock cell phones, people complain, and within a week, obama has a hard line stance saying it'll get fixed.
but the TSA has been molesting everyone from toddlers to wheelchair ridden old people, stealing shit like billy the kid, and overwhelmingly failing to locate terrorists and repeatedly failing to find contraband. backscatter is now proven to cause cancer at higher rates than actual terrorist death rates under normal operation, so the EU pulled them. after years of all this, obama can't lift a finger or even say a word. |

Love, for being a snake in the grass who is quietly going along with all the DMCA-like corporatist ass-fucking, and then, when called out on it, makes a meaningless populist concession and makes big new of it, wanting to be lauded as a hero of the people for it? Fuck that noise. _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

I think you're referring to Senator Cruz. Naturally, the so-called "progressives" do what they always do: make an appeal to ridicule (by Eric Holder in this case). Highly inappropriate when answering a serious question from a United States Senator.
Keep in mind this in the context of the Obama having ordered the use of an anti-tank missile to take out the last American citizen he had arbitrarily executed without any legal process -- an anti-tank missile fired at a car that was just driving down the road, carrying not only the target but his young son. Terrorist or not, the man was a U.S. citizen; and this was murder.
Here is the exchange. I find Holder's attempt at ridicule and ambiguous responses completely inappropriate -- this is not a laughing matter:
| Quote: | WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Attorney General Eric Holder and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, got into a heated discussion during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the use of drones against American citizens.
Questioning Holder about a letter he sent to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., in which the attorney general said it would take an “extraordinary circumstance” to use a drone to kill an American on U.S. soil, Cruz asked if such lethal force would be constitutional.
“If an individual is sitting quietly at a café in the United States, in your legal judgment, does the Constitution allow a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil to be killed by a drone?” Cruz asked Holder.
Holder responded tongue-in-cheek: “For sitting in the café and having a cup of coffee?”
Cruz continued pressing, asking again, “If that individual is not posing an imminent threat of death or bodily harm, does the Constitution allow the drone to kill that individual.”
Holder said that he does “not think that would be an appropriate use of lethal force.”
Cruz was left unsatisfied with Holder’s answers.
“I find it remarkable that in that hypothetical which is deliberately very simple you are unable to give a simple one word, one syllable answer: no. I think it is unequivocal that if the U.S. government were to use a drone to take the life of a U.S. citizen on U.S. soil and that individual did not pose an imminent threat that would be a depravation of life without due process,” Cruz stated. |
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/03/06/cruz-goes-after-holder-about-constitutionality-of-using-drones-to-target-americans-on-us-soil/
They want the American people to be satisfied with the answer that "This President would never do that" (what I heard on MSNBC today)
Sorry, but history has shown that if the authority is his, a President will do anything. They have waged campaigns of assassination, traded weapons with our avowed enemies in exchange for illicit cash to bribe drug lords, lied, cheated, been addicted to drugs, burglarized their oppositions' offices, carried out unauthorized military operations while concealing them from the public, propagandized the people, dropped atomic bombs... and this one is the most lying motherfucker of them all: the one with "more flexibility after his re-election." Sorry, but this is not an acceptable response.
Except as an act of immediate self-defense (e.g., attack imminent), there must be legal process. This is a direct and egregious violation of the Constitution. No verbal response from the White House is an adequate end to this. This is far worse than "enhanced interrogation" -- this is a precedent for the President to completely ignore the Constitional rights of citizens. The practice must be stopped until a suitable legal process can be integrated (and some blanket review by the White House Counsel doesn't count -- there must be case-by-case judicial approval).
Talk about "slippery slopes". Holy fuck. This is worse than anything portrayed in dystopian science fiction. Even in 1984, Big Brother didn't have flying machines just taking their own people out. It's inconceivable that it has been allowed. It's something Idi Amin, Saddam Hussein, or Muammar Khaddafi would do. Why are so-called "liberals" not marching on Washington?! _________________ Oldthinkers unbellyfeel INGSOC.

| Rand Paul: Country Is Ready For A "Libertarian Republican Narrative" wrote: | | PAUL: Where I agree with Senator Graham, if you have a grenade launcher on your shoulder, by all means, and you're firing at Americans, you don't need due process. But if you are sitting in a cafe in Paris or Yemen, there should be a process where a judge decides your guilt, or a jury. | But who said it was less the point than the believable possibility that Obama might do it.
| Quote: | Cruz continued pressing, asking again, “If that individual is not posing an imminent threat of death or bodily harm, does the Constitution allow the drone to kill that individual.”
Holder said that he does “not think that would be an appropriate use of lethal force.”
Cruz was left unsatisfied with Holder’s answers. | Sounds like Cruz needs to take some vocabularly lessons. Seems pretty clear to me, even if he made a joke of it in the prior statement. Despite being more than one syllable, 'appropriate' and 'lethal' are pretty basic words. _________________ lolgov. 'cause where we're going, you don't have civil liberties.
