I know it's an economical crisis going on, but it's good that priorities are set right. 2700 armored vehicles to "serve warrants and stuff".

What part of Ruby Ridge and Waco weren't high risk?

The equation goes something like this: Mostly Harmless + Law Enforcement = High Risk

What in god's name are they going to do with 2,700 of these gas-guzzlers, and who is going to pay to maintain them (an enormous burden).

What it shows is that we've indeed got a little President's Private Army growing there within DHS, specifically for domestic use.

At least one campaign promise kept: During his 2008 campaign, President Obama said that the United States needed a civilian national security force “that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the U.S. military.

You want surreal? If you actually look at the various Executive Orders issued by Presidents over the last 30 or so years pertaining to emergencies of various types, it becomes very clear that all our precious rights go out the fucking window the moment an "emergency" or "disaster" is declared. The instant that happens, unbeknown to the general population, the country is basically under martial law and the Federal Government has authorized itself to do basically whatever it wants (seizure of assets, relocation of people, internment of people, seizure of industries, forced labor, etc., etc., etc.).

Yeah... they have been dropping the turds every now and then, and masking it with pretense (or mechanics) of ideological divisions between the D and R.

The thing that makes it scary for me is the fact that prior to the 1991 in Yugoslavia, all the talk about military buildup, potential war along ethnic lines, power fight between the republics and positioning... all of that looked just like "words that bored middle-aged politicians used to toss around because they started losing hair and had to vent somewhere". It was just a spectacle, 99% of the people didn't really think that anything would happen. The economy was on the upswing, we got rid of communist party and planned economy, why would anyone want to engage in an activity that was reserved for black&white footage from WW2, or news report from some country in Africa or South America somewhere? Civil War? Ridiculous!

My father was not convinced that it was all just a game, he got genuinly worried and to us he came off as becoming obsessed by news and politics. He used to buy newspapers from different republics, and read and cross reference, to get a coherent picture. We honestly thought that he had an onset of schizophrenia, and were busting his ass about how he should take up fishing, or some other outdoorsy hobby. We still lived in denial when the war in Croatia kicked off, and restaurants and stuff in Bosnia were getting blown up every now and then by opposing factions. He had to fake that grandfather was ill, and that we should travel and visit him, which is how he got us to leave the town, otherwise I would have stayed for sure, convinced that it would all be soon over.

Denial is a motherf***er.

This is the "That's never really going to happen" disease (a.k.a., the "I'm too young to have lived through anything and think History is a movie") disease. Most of the people in this forum have it. People who say things that are unpleasant to think about or that would be inconvenient to deal with are all just "paranoid", "alarmist", or "conspiracy theorists" (and we do have plenty of these, but the truth is a mixture of the rainbows and sunshine being pumped up our asses and these awful risks and possibilities).

Only the President's personal detail, and it also has smoke and teargas grenade launchers and a flame thrower.
