So, my neighbour Amancio Ortega is now worth 58 billion according to Bloomberg. He started with a little shop here in Coruña (pop. 200.000) in 1972; he still lives here, in a fucking apartment. WTF. How in hell do you go from a little clothing shop in a small city to 58 fucking billion dollars?

he started zara, which is renowned in the business world as one of the most innovative fashion companies. i don't mean innovative as in wearing weird shit (i'm sure you can find something like that though). he's just a good businessman.
it's alleged that their company's strongest advantage is their chain speed. they can literally A/B split test clothing. they deploy small amounts of products in select markets very quickly. as the winners sell, they get produced more. the failures don't sell, sit on the bargain racks, and don't get reproduced further. they also do local manufacturing in most of their testbed markets so they can speed up the chain. |
