If you're trying to compile everything against the original FFmpeg, be forwarned. GStreamer likes the (imho broken) Libav project instead.
This breaks compiled Firefox if you want HTML5 video. |

This isn't exactly the case. The devs here have done an outstanding job of porting applications so that either ffmpeg or libav work.
In the case you mention, firefox, you have to use the older gstreamer version-0.10.36, which is the only version supported by patches upstream by the mozilla foundation. This means you only have a two choices, either use an older and possibly vulnerable version of ffmpeg or libav, or unmask gst-plugins-ffmpeg-0.10.13_p201211.ebuild that's in the portage tree, which allows you to use more recent versions of ffmpeg which are also masked.
Gst-plugins-ffmpeg-0.10.13_p201211 is a back-port by one of our Gentoo devs of a more recent gst-plugins-libav that works with newer versions of libav and ffmpeg. See this bug report https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423717
I'm currently using combination of firefox-19.0.2, ffmpeg-1.2, gstreamer-0.10.36, and gst-plugins-ffmpeg-0.10.13_p201211 together with good results. I can pass all of the HTML5 tests that I've tried, and have no issues with HTML5 video.
I hope this helps.
